ok,
here is the scenario...I'm 29 (uk based) I have been at my current job just over 2 years (digital designer), I have around 2 years experience previous to my current job (in print/digital)....I have just split from my girlfriend, have no other ties, and I ready for a change, in all parts of my life.
So, the change would be, leave everything, including my job and go volunteering in south east asia and teach kids art and english on the beach, probably for around 6 months or so.....sounds great, but would be on my own, which is daunting and also, the main question, would i be stupid to give up a job in the recession? and how easy would it be able to get another job?

You only live once, go for it. You can always get a job later.
- You'll probably regret it later if you don't.tcmmct
- But you're going to regret it now if you do.jonvictorino

I don't think we know you well enough, or the future well enough, to help you make this decision. But that probably won't prevent a bunch of numbnuts from telling you what to do.

Ask your parents or close friends. Internets are often misleading.

Do it. You're not missing out on anything work wise. It'll all be here when you get back. Plus you'll have something more to bring to the table when you come back. Go expand your mind. Why stop yourself from doing something that you're going to learn from?
But of course evaluate your situation with people who know you too, obviously.

Took a seven month trip round SE Asia. One of the best things I ever did...ultimately when you're older it's stuff like that that you'll be glad you did whilst young.
Recession will end, if you have a good body of work just go for it. Your skills will still be needed when you get back - nothing changes that dramatically

You know, life offers very little opportunity to test your inner strength by submersing yourself into a gentle but regular heroin engagement.
One really learns about moral fibre when undertaking a tug of war with the mighty horse. I have been valiantly pulling at the beast for a number of years now and only lately have I began to suspect it might finally have the better of me.

I lived in India for 6 months twice, it was worth it! I'm happy I did it too.... I can't imagine not having taken opportunities like this....

Do you have 200$ or 20,000$ in the bank?
That would help for the decision

If you are feeling called to go to asia and work with and teach kids, I don't think that's something you should ignore. I am not saying throw your brain or common sense away, but certain things are worth pursuing without overthinking them. Even if you don't believe in God, I think he will take care of you if you make such a decision.
Priceless imo. And the funny thing is, you will probably get more out of it than any of the children will. Now Go!
