What's the best way to copy large amounts of data (500GB) on a new HDD. PC to external. Just cut&paste or is there some software you would recommend?

That's not large.

copy, paste, check that everything is there, delete original files.

word to the wise, I once just tried a drag and drop and was going to leave it overnight,
then my area had a power outage and bye bye hard drive , make sure you have a battery powered surge protector

wouldn't it be easiest to drag and drop the files onto an external hard drive?
- Easier might not always be best, that's why I'm asking.Ruffian

wait!!!!
I don't know how it works with partitions.
- Corvo20
Nor if it doesn't screw long filenames...

i would do a test from HD to usb drive to see how it works with really long filenames, like mp3 files.

also use /-r to clear the read-only file attribute.

This might only be complex if the 500gb consisted of one or two files.
Assuming that's not the case, your OS is designed ti handle this kind of transaction easily.
Drag and drop away.

Thanks everyone, especially Corvo2! Will just dragndrop and hope there are no blackouts during the night :)

As I understood xcopy can't handle NTFS partitions, so that leaves it there.
