I just found out yesterday that next week will be my last at the design shop I work at. I was wondering how many of you have been laid off because of the economy and what city are you in? I'm in NYC.

Not that this applies to you because I have no clue about you, but I bet this whole recession business has been a great excuse for some studios to lay off people they have been umming and arring about
- This is true. My case was different. The work jsut wasn;t coming in like it used to. They tried to keep me on by cutting my hours back but in the end there was nothing that was really billable to work on for a few weeks. Bits here and there but not the amount that they were paying me.graphiknature

If that were true set, it would be reasonably easy to get a job..
I says it is not.

Yeah I think alot of places are just using the word "recession" to lay people off.
And other places are using the word to get design work done on the cheap. Last week I was in contact with this lady for freelance work and some of her first words when getting a bid from me was "well you know with the current recession we are looking to have the work done for the best price" I call BS!
- Yeah I jsut picked up a job and had to drop my hourly by $20. I need some cash coming in because I have to move in about a month and need all the cash i can get. Typically you never want to work for less than what you have been paid for previously but you also have to change with the times.graphiknature

The recession is real.

Sorry to hear that, this time last year I was in the same spot, but there's a few good jobs out there, just have to look hard. Good luck!
- Thanks. I'm sure everyhitng will work out. I may no end up in an ideal place but hey. bills and rent aren't cheap in NYC. I don;t have the luxury of being picky at this point.graphiknature

See the chart? If it goes UP left to right.. things are good. If it goes DOWN left to right.. its a recession.

I actually googled and found out where you work. Sorry I am stalky that way. There are better things. Go freelance, your skill sets are still in demand.
- I actually got 4 phone calls today and 3 emails. It's jsut a bit scary not to have the safety net of a full-time gig.graphiknature

I wasn't laid off but I quit because my agency let go over 30 people in the last year. 43 to be exact and one more got let go last week.
They're now strictly a black plate agency and I am in Dallas, Texas.

If a company truly was capitalizing on a recession.. they would use it as an excuse to lower your pay and double your workload.
No company is capitalizing by laying you off.
If they lay you off, they're hurting. No question about it.
- Yeah. The place i worked was small but we were very tight. Like a family. I'm a bit sad b/c it's the irst place i have worked where i didn't hate coming into work after being here for over 1.5 years. They said if they land something they will give me a ring.graphiknature

You are missing the point entirely winnie_the_shit.
All I implied was that if an employee was in question, the recession is a great excuse and even encouragement for the company to lay them off.
- Paranoia.winnie_the_shit
- I'm sure there are companies ou here doing it . i also think the ones doing that are just trying to cut overhead to prepare for the worst.graphiknature

If you're no good. Why does this company need an excuse to fire you?
- winnie_the_shit0
I feel your sentiment set.. and maybe one or two companies out there who still haven't learned the value of an employee have done it..
but.. it's not economical and it won't save them money, especially if they have work to do.
