Hi guys, just wanted to pick your brains. I've got a little job where I have to design a HTML site where certain areas (possibly all) will need to be updated via a CMS. I've cracked through a few designs, and the ones standing out to me use a non-standard font for some of the headers.
Since the some of the site will need to be updated by the client, what would your thoughts/suggestions be on using sIFR for the headings? (The majority of the content will still use standard web fonts).
I just thought I'd check with you guys before sending off to the CD and the inevitable head shakes from the Dev team... :-)
Thanks in advance!

slFR is fine for headings
or you could use Cufón
1. No plug-ins required – it can only use features natively supported by the client
2. Compatibility – it has to work on every major browser on the market
3. Ease of use – no or near-zero configuration needed for
standard use cases
4. Speed – it has to be fast, even for sufficiently large amounts of text- Will have a look into it, thanks!

- Do you reckon there'd be a problem with regard to font licensing? I'm assuming this method attaches a version of the font in your HTML page?Not_Just_Another
- the font in your HTML page?Not_Just_Another
- that's why they ask if your allowed to use the fontcreez
- with cufon - you're supposed to check the eula to see if it allows for 'web embedding'lukusW
- Will have a look into it, thanks!

Yeah Ive used it.
there is nothing wrong with it as long as your using sifr correctly.
You just need to be sure about what characters the user will be inputting, and make sure that the font supports it.
I have had experiences with foriegn characters not being supported and it breaking the output.

that looks pretty interesting Leigh, cheers

once set up, sIFR can be great for headings.
Cufón looks interesting

Thanks guys, maybe I should float the idea with the CD & the Dev team, see what happens...

Not sure if you're playing with Wordpress but they've got a plug in that sounds like a good example of what you're trying to do.
- Thanks for the link, will check it out. I think the CMS we're using is something called Concrete5, not sure if they have something similar :-)Not_Just_Another
- similar :-)Not_Just_Another

sign up to the cufon mailing list if you choose to use it - they've been quite a few people who've found small problems with it lately, and it's worth keeping informed to see how it all pans out.
if you use sIFR - try not to use a transparent background, some platforms can't display this and it will make your site look shit as a result.

Anyone have anything particularly nasty to say about Sufon vs. sIFR, before I waste the rest of the day learning about Cufon?
I'm sick of having to fix people's sites when a new browser version comes out or when they dick something and sIFR collapses in on itself.
- IE 6 (maybe 7/8 too?) uses VML to display the fonts... the 'nice' browsers use canvas .. they've been reports of some IE6 browsers have VML disabled because of alukusW
- you don´t to check cufon. not workie on Internet ExplorerMau
- (this probably has as much to do with shoddy implementation my end as anything else, in all honesty)Nairn
- Cufon claims it works from IE6 onwards, Mau?Nairn
- IE6 browsers not supporting cufon, because they have VML disabled (due to a security vulnerability back in 2006)lukusW
- Hmm, fuckit, I'll give it a play anyway. Thanks, LukeW.Nairn

It sounds like someone/software companies should really pull their finger out and sort out a definitive method of using non-web fonts online... this is pretty ridiculous. Thanks for all your suggestions though folks :-)

you just got to watch you dont use the sifr too much as it'll slow the page down loading.
only maybe have one headline and one or two subheadlines in sifr per pagewe've been using sifr quite a lot recently on sites - its brilliant to be able to use specific fonts

defo, we once had a developer use it on a fashion portal site... he had 20 instances of the sifr-header each had 6 languages embeded not to mention there were 6 flash ads on the page.
It took an age to load locally!
