Stop painting walls?

zero tolerance will save that city

there's 2 sides to this. some of the art is actually art. some of it is simply vandalism. the zero tolerance angle worked in ny with this kind of thing. it seems like a minority has screwed it for the majority of street artists.
one question, why do some people simply tag - including the engraving on public transport window glass - and call this art?
there is some truly amazing street art around, sublocked's magazine (clout i think it's called) that he keeps spaming here shows a shitload. i'd consider that art, i don't really get it, but i admire it's skill and on a fundamental level support the artists for the expression. so these artworks are tagged by the artist and i get that. it's a signature. but why do people that simply tag the same tag over and over with no actual artwork attached to it, call it art?
it's the equivalent (to me) as someone calling themselves a painter but simply signing blank canvas.
i'd love someone who actually does this stuff explain that to me. i'm open to new points, it's just something that i don't understand at all?

From the article: "Damaging or defacing property carries a fine of $2200 or six months jail, while possessing an instrument suspected of being used to graffiti property attracts a fine of $1100 or three months jail. "
So you can be fined for a suspected link to an offence now?
- exactly.. what about people who use graf materials in non illegal art.autoflavour
- for example, i paint my robots with montana.. and paint paintings with krink and OTRautoflavour

not enough people killing other people down there i guess.
- plus they made it harder to buy aerosol solvents which ruined my chroming hobby.airey

tagging is not grafitti. wake up toy
- huh?autoflavour
- wtf. it all came from the tag you moron. all a production is, is a fancy tag with colours and style!Stugoo

have to agree with it - some little bastard sprayed his tag crap on my garage door last night and it just looks a mess - infact, i'm just on my way to BunningsWarehouse right now to buy some paint to paint over it. There goes my saturday!
- ever think about offering you door as a legal wall.. get some good work there, no one will buff itautoflavour
- um, wtf?kelpie

look, i am not for tagging either.. but i what i DO understand they they are intrinsically linked.
The argument of saying you like pieces but hate tagging is like saying you love graphic design but hate typographic design.
look i have been living in Berlin, were it seems every muppet with a enough euro's to buy a can thinks they can go tag the entire city, and its a mess. but at the same time, it gives this city something, there is a energy to it. like the entire city is one huge gallery.
for every terribly executed tag, there is 10 awesome stencils, pieces and well executed tag..
i do agree tho sandpapering your name into a window is just lame.
but again, its all about fame.
- that point is not correct. typographic designers don't do their work on other peoples propertyforcetwelve

Well if i catch the cunt who keeps scrawling spastic shit on my gate and wall I'll kill the twat...that's still the reality of tagging.
- this just makes me want to find your fench and tag it myselfautoflavour

There are certain boundaries that I feel a writer should stick to... never hit someones personal property. how would you like it done to you.
tagging is unsightly... yes a nice tag is appreciated but it needs to be placed well. An entire street filled with tags can be shot down by one really nice tag placed in a really cool spot.
I dont like tagging but ultimately all a piece is, is a big fancy tag with outline, shadow, border, character, background... its escalated from when a tag was just a name... it had to have style to stand out and its gotten out of hand.As much as dog shit in the street is part of a community, tagging is part of urban and city life. its unaviodable and this not the first time that graffiti has been dealt with. If you do reading back to ancient roman times slogans have been scrawled on walls and the authorities have cracked down on it in heavier ways than just banning pens.
basically, it will cut out the fakes. but the real hardcore writers... your going to have to lock them up to stop them doing it.
- well its not gotten out of hand.. its got.... i dont want to say popular...Stugoo

i hope they like tagging cock cos they're gonna be doing a fair bit of it if they get put away for scribbling on walls

Some of you are such tools. You are coming from creative field and yet were stuck in the corporate dumpster for way too long and now thing that art should have boundaries and follow the rules. Yet, it shouldn't! Graffiti, tagging, collages made out of sticky paper on the train... It all is some kind of expression and in on way or another deals with the status quo (or the establishment not wanting to change anything). Most of it is not pretty or meaningful or going beyond the stupidity of the person doing it but... It is art in one way or another.
- just because something can be labeled art doesn't mean u have to like it or embrace itStylus
- lukusW0
.. it's an act of rebellion, but it's also an act of conformance imo - a lot of graffiti doesn't excite me so much any more. Tagging is basically the equivalent of territorial pissing, as far as I'm concerned.. it's a part of social culture, and I don't mind seeing it - but if someone tagged my garage I might be pissed off.
I've always loved Barcelona for it's graffiti - which seems original and unique to me, but I guess it's just because I'm not so used to seeing that style.

I like most graffiti but think tagging is something u should grow out of by about age 12

I did not even know that Sydney had running water, you mean to tell me they also have graffiti?
- cannonball0
@pr2
Tagging/grafitti is loaded with stupid rules... what's "ok" to do, what's not. It's got it's own status quo upheld by a juvenile macho "culture" if you wanna call it that, who tout their vandalism as "art" but fail to provide any merits to back up the fact.

NSW government is so out of touch its unreal. We vote these muppets in to make our life easier and they tell us we cant carry markers, cant go club hopping, force us to stop drinking every 20 mins and tell us to be home in bed at 2am.
