Are there any good software solutions that can automate this process?

about a million.

look for one that syncronises as some only do a complete backup which obviously takes a lot of time.

i guess if it were me, i'd select the 2nd link which has reviews of the best backup apps of 2008 written by (hopefully) someone with knowledge rather than simply opinion. of course that's just me and as pointed out i'm a numbnuts.

and then of course you could look into the software that comes with your OS:

although it is microsoft so this might very well destroy the hard drive.

then there's norton, which has seemed to be around forever:

of course i don't have a pc so i wouldn't know where to start looking.

i've not used it, but generally people recommend retrospect > http://www.retrospect.com/produc…

... spend $50 / year - unlimited space... i've got about 70 gig stored up there and a regular automated backup schedule...
... saved my butt a few times this year.

Get an external drive and properly back your shit up, you get the software for free anyway.
Any of the new Verbatim external hard drives comes with a free copy of Nero BackItUp Essentials 2, I've used it and it's great.
Western Digital drives also have proprietary software for their MyBooks which are pretty good.
The NT Backup system can be configured in quite a complex manner if you're a DOS scripting guru, but I would generally avoid it.

I have a TB drive and this software - http://www.buffalotech.com/techn…
backups are done as soon as files are saved (as long as file are in a destination you specified to be backed up) and very little overhead when doing it - even with large files.
the software came with the drive I purchased which wasnt too expensive - you can also buy the software separately.
