M S Corley redesigned Harry Potter and Lemony Snicket book covers to look like Penguin Classics.

While I like the throwback look of the design(s), I feel that they are a bit inappropriate for the books themselves. Harry Potter will be locked into popular culture for generations, but making the books look old-fashioned doesn't seem like the best solution.
It feels like the artist really, really wanted to execute a Saul Bass / Paul Rand look and didn't care whether it was for a line of literary classics or a Warner Brother's franchise.
Once again, I think they look good, but missed the mark. Anyone?
- I also detest the "weathered" look that they incorporated into the art.monospaced

It's a nice experiment.

- Well, I guess they fall in line with the look of the Penguin classics. This one is from the 60s.monospaced

I imagine it's more about imagining those covers being created back in the Sixties, rather than suggesting these are appropriate for a redesign. They are modern classics, so he's asking "what would the covers have been like back then".
So it's nothing to do with making them look old-fashioned. Some would see it as a pointless exercise. I think it's an interesting brief to give yourself to make you think and work differently.
