I lost a friend last week, he committed suicide.
This weekend was his funeral, and make me more sensible to the topic. Here in the city there are a few ads for the 800 numbers but they all look grim and emphasize more the negative look ... I dont know, I feel that should be some kind of contest for designers to revamp the image of some organizations, come up with a better prevention campaign.here are some examples.

Yesterday there was *another* jumper on the Manhattan Bridge. The Stewdio windows are front row seats to sadness climax.

Unfortunately, most of those who successfully take their own lives never bother to call the hotlines, as great a service they provide.
- It's not so much that the hotlines fail to reach these people; just that many don't want to talk things out or cry out for help.waterhouse

I think the target should be the people around the suicidal person.
- agreed, they could be in a better position to help.arthur

I'm deeply sorry for your loss. Friends and family are the real victims of suicide. I'd have to agree with a few others that people that have successfully comitted suicide don't really want to "talk it out." Calling somebody just tends to make things worse because of the fear of dealing with your suffering coming out in a public manner. It compounds problems because society decided that its better to arrest, humiliate, institutionalize and alienate those who are already suffering so much. IMO, the only way to really deal with this problem is to actively make our society a better place and help each other out. That being said, if this even helps one person, it's worth a pro bono project for some talented designer.

I'm sorry for your loss. I think it's a great thing that you're able to try and find or inspire better awareness of the issue.

Sorry for your loss.
I think the best way would be to show the faces of people answering the phones.. and that you can call, even if you're not standing on edge.
- The phone volunteers prefer to remain anonymous.waterhouse
- Yeah, I know.. but show some faces you can relate toAnders

It is causes/organizations like these that need/deserve/are well worth great pro-bono work.

How did he/she go?
My friend's friend got depressed after getting kicked out of med school, put a brown bag over his head and run on the highway...

sorry to hear that dude. My brothers best friend killed himself around 12 years ago, its one of the saddest things I ever had to deal with.

i'd need to call the number and hear the counselor talk – understand their approach to come up with an idea. but i do like the challenge and you've got me thinking.
when i hear of someone committing suicide i usually consider the tremendous amount of pain they were living with and don't feel i am in any position to judge their action – perhaps if i were in their shoes i'd have done the same.
as with any death, it's harder on the living and i'm too am sorry for your loss. if i think of any ideas i'll comp them up and send them to you.
