The current website I am redoing recreating has a database which I do not have access to. A template and cms was used. The user/manager input all of the data, in this case courses. How is this different than building a relational database yourself?? Any help is appreciated.

Step 1.) Get access to the database so you can pull the information out otherwise it's going to be nightmare trying to pull it manually from teh website, and horribly inefficient.

I ma creating a whole new database in MS Access
- im trying to ask how is it different ising a premade template?redant
- Well building one yourself you can control all the bells & whistles for one.flavorful
- Templates are made for people who need to know very little about database structure and the like.flavorful
- They get the DB set up, and then they only access it through a Web Interface to make modifications to the data itself.flavorful
- Though the DB they are using now may be just fine, and instead you should focus on Web UI.flavorful

Okay ... so what is your question here, haha?
You want to move the data from one database to the other?

you really ought to develop the database in the same format as the one where it will be deployed otherwise your costing yourself time and effort and potential hassle

maybe dumb Q. I am trying to organize this complex database ( to me anyway)
Courses
Title, Description, Type, Sub-Type, Quarter, Audience(s), Objectives,
Prerequisites, Length, Date(s), Location(s), Resource(s)A site has been created my boss wants nothing to do with it or with IT so we are remaking a site from scratch and a database.
I was trying to figure out how the original database current one was created, since he used a .NET template and the manager input the course data throught the admin panel. I will do something similar, but I'm creating this complex relational database and it seems his was alot less complex and created on the fly. I know no one can understand my logic, but if anyone can pls help!! Thanks.

is the db where the current site lives a MS Access db?

It's going to be pretty hard to know what the heck you are talking about without you going into vivid detail about what you need to do unfortunately.
Things like "Title, Description, Type, Sub-Type, Quarter, Audience(s), Objectives, Prerequisites, Length, Date(s), Location(s), Resource(s)" mean absolutely nothing to anyone, haha.

yea i guess im like "am i going in the right direction" i ahve to use Access for now.
I cant use PHP.

I am among those who cannot understand your logic.
But why Access? Whynot MySql?
And what are you going to use as a language to connect to the database with? PHP?

you really need to be able to know what type of db the production db is? If its the same version and release as yours and you can run queries (maybe through the control panel used to administer the sever) then you should be okay. Otherwise I would consider another option - like hosting with a db you know

no the current db is probably SQL. I think tha tis what its called. WE are going to have the database oon our own server.
I am redesigning a training site. I am combining two training
department's courses. They are currently organized in this way:Title, Description, Type, Sub-Type, Quarter, Audience(s), Objectives,
Prerequisites, Length/Days, Date(s), Location(s), Resource(s)The two department's courses were organized slightly different but I combined them to come up with the above.
They currently have a database and are using a content management system. The current structure or UI design is not working.
I good with design but have not done a database such as this. I have the site flow and site wireframes semi done and now need to figure out a simple way to create the database.
There are approximately 80 courses.

i am making asp pages in dreamweaver and connecting to the database that way.

as your using a CMS that is tied into the current db and you are going to use it for the re-design I would stay away with recreating the db the way you want to. If you did you would have to make sure the CMS worked with your new db structure - which might give you blindness in one eye if your not careful.
Your tied to the CMS so I would go looking for the documentation for that first and it 'should' explain how you integrate it into your new design.

no no I am just creating the whole thing from scratch I just wanted to make sure I was doing it right. I'm just going to move forward. I'm jus freaking a little becasue I thought it could be done an easier way.

As others have suggested.. you don't need to create a new database.. just learn the structure of the old one and select accordingly.
But if it is out of your skillset.. I supposed there isn't much else you can do.
databases take experience and practice to make and use well..
- No I can not do that. My boss wants nothing to do with the IT dept.redant

What type of Database is it? Have you considered exporting it to a CSV file?
