So, this morning about 7:30am I stopped in the bank to get some cash and discovered someone had left their checkbook on the shelf in front of the ATM kiosk. Since the bank was closed and no one was around I decided to take it with me and try to contact the owner.
Later this morning I called information to get a contact number, but the folks had an unlisted number...so I went to the google and with some follow through - name / address linked to a local comunity news site with the person giving some kind of PTA talk and listed her as a local business owner...so I called the business and got the checkbook owner..said I'd be happy to drop off the checkbook...
So this afternoon in the snowstorm I drove ten minutes out of my way to deliver lost checkbook to the owner of a tres chic french cheese/wine/coffee shop in a ritzy NYC suburb. I inquire about the owner, give her her checkbook and she says thanks and walks away.
How fucking rude. I mean.shit I don't expect a reward or anythign but maybe a free bit of cheese or a cup of coffee or a bottle of cheap wine would of been a nice gesture. Where are people'S sense of fucking courtesy and decorum these days.I mean if I lost my wallet or checkbook and someone made an effort to get it to me I'd do something nice in return.
No, I got "thanks" and a walk away.
Shit..I should fucking just walked around town leaving her blank checks all over the place.

This makes me think there really is no selfless act.
Of course, I would've felt the same way as you.

The deed was still good. Some people are just clueless cunts.
I applaud you, Sir.

I mean, I didn't return it expecting anything, but I mean she owned a shop. Just the fucking courtesy of saying "Would you like a coffee or some cheese danish..." It's just the decent thing to do, you know...
- I totally agree with you, but it doesn't diminish your kindness though.NotByHand

That doesn't undermine the kindness of what you did, as much as it sucks.

you didn't expect anything in return yet here you are complaining about not getting anything in return.
maybe you're just playing the part in some social experiment that will air on mtv in a few months where they ask "how far will people go to do a good deed, then how pissed off will they be with only a polite 'thank you' in return?"
and arvizu said it best. "doing the right thing is it's own reward."
- It's more of not getting gesture or offer in return than getting anything tangible...TheBIueOne
- did you check the part of the checkbook where they balance it? maybe she was broke.sigg
- All I wanted was the gesture, I would've turned anythign down no matter what..TheBIueOne

Similar thing happened recently to my co-worker. Found someone's iPod on the train. It had their name engraved on it. Found them and sent it to them. However, things turned out real nice. The owner sent a very gracious message, and then sent my coworker a 20 dollar iTunes card. He wasn't expecting that at all, we though case closed. So that was nice.

Ah,I don't know why I let it bug me..that whole community is made up of hedge fund managers, bankers, lawyers and tiny little pretentious shops they let their wives open as tax write offs because they never turn a profit. It's just rude classless noveua rich fucks as far as the eye can see...

you kind of sound like homer simpson.
"i mean, i didn't want an award or anything, but maybe a small reward like a cheesecake or cup or coffee, or an itunes giftcard as a reward for returning her checkbook. but i mean god, it wasn't like i was expecting a reward or anything."

I think we can all agree that the real tragedy here is that you didn't have the ability to taunt her with a Christian Bale soundboard at that moment.

Not at all. I am just bummed about the lack of appreciation and courtesy. Maybe being around Japanese people all the time has skewed my sense of what is considered decent consideration towards another person. WHat I did I hope anyone would do, and I wasn't looking for compensation of any kind other than simply doing the right thing. What irks me is the attitude. An offer of compensation, no matter how small, would of been the correct and courtesy thing to do is all I am saying. Do you see the difference between me doing something for a "reward" (which I wasn't) and just me lamenting at the lack of social decorum in the situation...ah maybe I'm just too old fashioned...

mayeb when you left she was like "damn" I was rude.
- sureshot0
If I where her I would say; hey thats fucking awesome! hey thanks!
please come in and have a pizza with me!

I was at SEMA, guy in front reached into his pocket, dropped about 6-7 $20 bills on floor. I told him, Sir you dropped your money. He gave me a dirt look and swooped up his cash.
