edit - whoops, forgot to add that I was taking the obvious solutions and expanding them to the less obvious solutions.

start making the kind of work you want to make now. no need for a client. Show enough people what you're doing and eventually you'll connect with the people who want to pay you for it

make a list of the companies/agencies/design firms you want really want to work with. and then, make sure that your stuff is top notch. then hit them up.

I'm just trying to get some feedback on career options.
In the bay area, it seems like graphic design is predominately limited to advertising usage. I'm not sure that advertising is the role for me. It was fun to push myself to take the obvious solutions to the projects that came across my desk, but after awhile, I started getting bored and feeling like the work I was getting to work on was unfulfilling in a substantial way. Now, I'm starting to look for work again. I'd like to be able to work on wide variety of projects similar to subject matter done by Pentagram (not the literal sense, just similar subject matter), does anyone have an suggestions where to start refining my searches (i.e. not just the job boards)? Is this too vague?
