Have received a really messy Indesign file that needs to be worked on, want to know if there's a way to select a load of shit and send it to a layer? There's basically no layers been used, everything is on one layer, want to seperate elements so I can wade through it.
I imagine it's either impossible or stupidly easy. Put me out of my misery.

create new layer then..
cut + paste
- I think he was looking for a way to avoid this.monospaced
- Yeah, and paste in place if you wanna keep the layout the same.
(cmd + alt + shift + v)Andrew_D - It would also be Paste Into Place (command-option-shif...monospaced
- doesn't paste into the same space tho, and will require lots of clicking to select all the things in one go so its a uniform movementHoax

paste in place will be the quickest solution to this poo problem, dunno why i didn't think of doing it that way. i am just being lazy i suppose... ho hum

there is no shortcut to make it any easier than cut and paste in place.
so get to work pastey!

Just select all/some of the bits you want on a new layer, then in your layer palette, drag the coloured button from one layer to the other, don't cut and paste.
One helpful thing to do would be to hide the layer, make it invisible, then as you move the elements they disappear and you can see exactly what you have left to move.

Install Quark. Open the file in Quark using the "import Indesign" plugin and then select "file, export to Indesign," checking the "group junk to layer" box. Then uninstall Quark and open in Indesign.
