I suppose woolly hats might fall into the grey area of art/illustration/design, but only in winter

Could, quite possibly, a dismembered duck foot found on the side of the dusty road be considered an animal?
Who the bloody fuck cares.

I would say that duck foot is 'animal' but not 'AN animal'

I divide it thus:
A structural hat, hard and architectural in its construction and fabrication is a protective device, and so is no more apparel than Captain America's arm shield.
A soft hat of a fluid flexible form and fabrication is something that yields to the dynamic mores of the anatomy it wraps, and is therefore as much a part of the clothing as Dame Judy Dench's sarong.
Anything else is probably a tiara, to a greater or lesser degree.

This issue has kept me awake at night too.
The hat as a signifier has several possible meanings, and to this extent it also represents one of aims of QBN, which is to show the possibilities of a pluralistic criticism authorising the interpretation of several meanings in user generated text. As for the oblique reference to duck feet, the animal is a sign from linguistics indicating alternation between two terms of a paradigm. Strictly speaking, the idea of a "hat" merely contributes to a unquantified cloud of irrelevant drivel that the public voice generates on a daily basis.

I often wonder if it is in what the hat represents that its true meaning is found. Man chooses to crown himself king of the world and in so doing both garlands and draws attention to that organ which has set him aside from other animals.
My hat; my crown; my world, sayeth man.

no man should ever wear a berets if that helps.

Clothing is selfless, whereas hats are for the self-loathing.
I think that's right.

I believe your digit analogy is flawed. The thumb, whilst being opposable, is equal in its stature and importance to the fingers. Therefore if you seek to make an analogy it should be "is the hat the knuckle hair to the trouser's index finger?".
