I'm doing a PhD right now.
but I'm not a graphic designer.
- I like this route.
More useful for becoming a teacher or if you're interested in research.Jaline - I mean, particularly if you're a designer. Otherwise, it's not necessarily. Build up the folio.Jaline
- I have a full time job as a design researcher and the PhD is part time...lowimpakt
- See, that makes sense.Jaline
- (my second note doesn't really make sense. ignore it)Jaline
- I like this route.

Seriously, what could possibly a graphic design phd be about? the socio-economical context of Photoshop?

- Probably.Jaline
- I wouldn't want a mechanic to design a car, or a plumber to design a dam. What's wrong with knowledge?nilsnihil
- I don't think that's the question nils. Phd is a scientific title.Corvo2
- I think its more a title denoting specialized knowledgenilsnihil

Will you be able to prescribe me meds?
- Jaline0
If you have nothing else to do, you can get money, and just like learning in general, then sure. Otherwise I don't see how PhD is particularly relevant in the design industry. I probably would've done one if I didn't decide to study some more web stuff.
- That being said, I would never say anything against a person who wanted to study more.Jaline

why do you feel you need a phd? masters even seems like overkill imo... a degree will get you in the door then your work must speak for itself.
- Mimio0
Is there such a thing as a Phd is design? There's one in Art History.
- Corvo20
Phd: "The rise of bevelled buttons: its practitioners and context during the XX century."
- harlequino0
Well, the program at that kid's school from the "Do you understand..." thread seems pretty solid.
- designbot0
I doubt emu is talking about a phd in design.
Probably just wants general input. Which I can't contribute to, sorry :)
- Jaline0
General input:
Go for it.
- canuck0
Yeah, what would the phd be in?
- emukid0
i have no clue. i am open to suggestions
- Corvo20
I think a Phd is useful if you're teaching or doing theoretical research on a specific subject (could be GD but then you'd have to be teaching Visual Arts or something).
If people start using it as a promotional skill (which is not, because it's only valued inside universities) Phd will lose it's scientific value. Most universities throughout the world wouldn't accept you as a Phd student, I think.
- You can get into Med school with an Arts degree, as long as you have select courses. I think it depends on the university.Jaline
- Or Visual Arts History.Corvo2
- You can? Well, then maybe the process is not the same in every country.Corvo2
- Yup. My sister may go, and she's in Science. She told me that she knows people who have Arts degrees.Jaline
- That's really weird. Why would an Arts degree be relevant in any field of Medical Sciences?Corvo2
- I can only think of psychology/therapy - but that's a long call.Corvo2
- A lot of people do that so their marks are higher when it comes time to enroll. But they don't have as much knowledge.Jaline
- I see.Corvo2
- But I guess you make up for it somehow once you get into Med School and start practicing.Jaline
- Yes. I forgot about the Slice Tool in PS CS :P :FCorvo2

you know you can just buy a phd online. save you all that money, and work.
- emukid0
do i need to finish high school before they let me in a phd program?
- horton0
i'd get into Art History if i was to move away from creative and higher my education at that level.

Did you check your mail today? Some universities in the other end of the world are attributing Phds, but you have to pay 50 dollars.
