Is it ok for companies and individuals use music by an artist without their permission to elevate their work. Everyone does it. has anyone had experience of any comebacks?

I'm sure its fine, the RIAA is usually pretty understanding about that kind of stuff.

Totally, copyright laws, come onnnn, no one cares! I say you choose something underground. You know, something like the Rolling Stones, Metallica or the Beatles.

Cease & desist.

Im just interested because the right track makes a compilation of work (moving image mostly) much more engaging with it.

I'd imagine if it's something that's not too mainstream, you could probably contact the artists' management and let them know you're wanting to use it in a commercial setting that you aren't "selling", just self-promotion. They might be alright with it.

do it but dont post it to either vimeo or youtube. they both are pretty active about recognizing music and shutting the videos down, we posted a music video we worked on with the label and artist and had contractual rights to post it and still got shut down cuz we didnt credit it correctly.
