Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.
- I never really agreed with him on this, but then, he was rather privileged.max_prophet

"If any one were to ask me what in my opinion was the dullest and most stupid spot on the face of the Earth, I should decidedly say Chelmsford."so it's not the worst place to move

Didn't say I was tired of London - St Albans is 25 mins direct to Farringdon.
Can buy a house 3 times bigger than the my shithole surrounded by council chavs in SW London which takes me 50 mins to get in.
Personally, sounds like a good move to me... Well providing there are no chavs... Is it chavvy?!?!

Not the worst but far from the worst, maybe you should take a visit before deciding to splash your cash on a Hertfordshire Mansion....
Not full of chavs but there are a few as with anywhere..

I lived in St Albans a while back. I liked it. Good-ish links to London. It's expensive on the train and at the obvious times it is rammed. Nevertheless the links were the reason we moved there in the first place. Property, when we bought was not too expensive but it then went absolutely balistic. I think it has calmed down now, though. There are a lot of commuters there because of the train link (into the city so you can guess the type of people who you might meet). I found the atmosphere there really nice and villagey but without being so cut off.
Schools are good, if you have children. Best to live within walking distance of the town. We were in Garden Fields area. Since we left it has got even more cosmopolitan with more restaurants and more decent shops.
Not sure where you're living now but it should give you the feeling of being out of London without being cut-off from London.
+ points:
Pubs were pretty good, some nice walks very nearby, good links, leafy, traditional, great market, property will probably will keep it's value/status because of good schools etc
- points:
It's not really the countryside nor a city, some jerks live there, some parts are very expensive, travel cost into london, crammed trains,Chavs - not really, more likely to be bankers, lawyers, consultants, who are a bit up themselves. Some decent cars parked around the old Victorian terraces so kind of Barnes like without being out of anyones league.
Hope that helps best of luck.
We moved for personal reasons otherwise we'd still be there.

I actually have to move to the hertfordshire area, was considering St Albans, Watford, Potters Bar, but being a born and bred Londoner I can't deny that I am mildly bricking it... Anyone know if there's anywhere in Northern suburbia, virtually identical to East Dulwich in spirit but with less babies and cheaper housing?
- yakismaki0
Didn't mean to hijack the thread by the way... Are you considering other areas? Radlett etc?

According to C4 St Albans is the 13th best place to live in Britain. http://www.channel4.com/4homes/o…
