Well actually, art is the bastard son of graphic design and design overall.
Painting, sculpting & drawing was always a commisioned job.
Its only the last 200 years it changed from having a client that asks for that kind of painting or sculpture to the other way around.
You can see all the old masters more as craftsmen that as artists.- I think someone scratched some art in the sand a long, long time ago..ribit

Graphic design is a craft, existing for the sake of commerce and/or communication in general, which occasionally rises to the level of art when it transcends the limits of original client briefs and is absorbed into the canon of visual culture.

- You belittle graphc design a little by talking about 'client briefs'.. design doesn't have to be tied to a commercial deal.ribit
- I know that, it's why I said "and/OR communication in general". And by brief, that could be a self-initiated brief.gramme
- BTW I never get written briefs anymore, that is anything more elaborate than an email or a phone call.gramme

Art is a free way to say something to everyone; Design is a controlled way to say something for a very specific public and with defined goals to achieve, most of the time use art aesthetic elements, but most important it follows productions specs...
Is not art.
