Does anyone use this? http://www.mikeindustries.com/bl…
- bulletfactory0
yes

Yes. Used it on a small microsite before. Handy, works pretty good. Took me a while to set it up properly, though I could've been tired. I'd recommend, but as he says, use it sparingly for headlines or small pieces of text/links, don't go mental with it thinking you can render all the text on a page with it.

we did on a number of projects, but ran into all kinds of problems.
the developers protested very passionately against sifr, so now we do not use it anymore.
- developers schmellopers.Nairn
- Why did they protested against it?ximeraLabs
- and what kind of problems?ian
- I remember problems when you combine sifr with dynamic text (cms), line breaks went bust.gung_hoek
- then there were problems with layers on top of the siffer-parts, maybe png layers.gung_hoek
- on one occasion the html copy text was rendered before the sifr parts, time lag there.gung_hoek
- all fixable I guess, but the development time exploded. also IE issues...gung_hoek
- yup, its a pain if you're working on something complex to time/budget constraintskelpie
- ugh, lag and ajax whizzery are indeed massive constraints.Nairn
- it's just a bad idea. gives me the shivers.stewdio
- sounds like the developers are just lazy bastards not willing to strive for perfection :P23kon
- i think the lazy bastards could also be the designers who can't figure out a better solution then siFRakoni

I think depending on the traffic on the site it can really batter a server, but I love the results it gives. Wouldn't be using it on a heavy e-com thing or anything though (bit decadent using up bandwidth to get a nice font on a site that's about function and sales anyway, I would htink)
- +1, as with any kind of technology/effect, its knowing when to use it and when not to that is the important partian

Pussies!
Sifr is really good, you gotta learn to tame the beast.
we use it on almost every project, headers and sub headers only.
it _is_ possible to use it for links n stuff but try to avoid it.minimal use is recommended though as it increases load time.

read :

and you proly want sifr 3 .

used it, very impressed.
btw for lightweight solutions recently i've stumbled upon this:

yes, and here is the version with jQuery:

I think that sIFR is good for headings, possible big tag lines, but not good for regular text.
- nearestexit0
thanks for the info everyone. i was only thinking of using for headers, so i might give it a try on a small project first.
- 23kon0
yeah, use it quite a lot
like 303 said, its good to use for like h1 / h2 / h3 (as long as theres not too many on a page) but dont use as body copy as itl slow things right down.its not been me thats programmed it so i dont know if thats the methodd we've used, but certainly flash replacement.
used it on a gallery site. features a flash background that fades in images (or slideshow) with html text on layer above accompanied by flash replacement text. works well, the whole thing looks like a flash site but its all completely accessible - sweet.

Don't use it for navigation. It only gives you problems. We still have it in use for navigation on http://www.high5.de.
Use it for headlines, it is great. We have many sites where it runs live.
- bulletfactory0
the one thing I dislike about it is when you dump the styles (disable CSS in firefox etc) The swf still displays, as well as your normal H1, H@ etc. elements - so there are duplicate titles on the page - here's a page I used it on so you can see what I mean.... there's two of each title.

sIFR is too much to put together.
On my new site and blog I used typeface-js, which I think is much easier to use.

I would avoid sIFR, unless it's for a really big project, where your client has to be able to create custom headlines via a CMS or the like. Using it for body copy would be overkill, in my opinion.
First of all, it relies on Flash and thus it is less accessible than a regular CSS solution, ie. <h1> with background image.
Second, it does not give you control on character level. That leaves you with auto kerning, and that's too bad INNIT? :)
In addition to that, you have to implement sIFR into what ever solution you deliver to your client. Sometimes it's easy and sometimes it's a nag job. Depends, but you should take it into consideration.
- the method weve used allows you to tweak kerning etc23kon

I don't mind sIFR in small doses, but think it can be relied on too much. I've even seen it implemented in a site's main navigation which I think is a terrible idea.
- I hear that often. The question is, why is it a terrible idea for navigation?Nathan_Adams
- Well for one thing it'll be the last thing on the page to load...

it's used loads here http://www.pizzaexpress.com/our-… seems to be sturdy
- quamb0
tried to use but on windows ie and firefox the text looked real crap - all aliased and glitched out.
