Thinking of getting one of these. Anyone got one, what are they like to use?

general pics - want to be able to keep it in my pocket. I've got DSLR EOS 1d but it's too big to lug around.
rounce - your comment wasn't all that clear - why do you think they are crap?

My mum got my dad one for xmas.
My dad is a good photographer and has some quality kit. My mum wanted to get him a decent priced wee camera but was still really good quality for taking on holidays - especially for walking around dodgier neighbourhoods - cos she feels paranoid when my dad takes out his big camera bag.
Its a really nice camera to hold and the pic quality it really good.
The menu dial seems a bit mad to start off with but its actually pretty cool when you realise how it works. It's a decent little "all purpose" compact for both the average snapper and going a bit more indepth - you can switch to having full control over everything rather than automatic.
Its a good camera for the price, but if you were wanting something to "build on" then you'd be better going for like the RIcoh GX100/200 something similar that you can add aftermarket lenses to and has a hotshoe for flashes etc.
From what you said, sounds like the camera would suit you well if its just a camera for having on you all the time. It is really small and about the size of a bulky mobile phone.

you can also get it for like £250 at jessops and amazon so it's WELL worth the cash likes. You could do a lot lot lot worse for the same money.

And ultimately I went with picture quality above all else. If it means I have to learn more about photography to wield it (and I know a fair bit), then I think that's a good thing.
As for the speed of the thing - it's faster than taking the film to the shop which I've been doing up until today. That was £40 a pop to my standards each time... :/
Moth's gone digital.
- you'll be able to get aftermarket lenses etc for it - plus its got the hotshoe too :)23kon

hey, thanks for the feedback on this. Will go for it since it seems to do what I want to do. I don't need to build on it as I have pro DSLR kit (lenses and flash guns) which I'd use for anything serious.

Hey moth, nice one man.
Thats meant to be a really nice camera.
I have read that you need to know your technical stuff to get the best results from it - that its not a 'beginers - automatic - camera' thing.Look forward to hearing what you think of it.
Certainly amazing resolution and clarity in photos. The DP1 has definitely set the standard for the future (compacts with DSLR sized sensors).
Yup I used to swear by Analogue as it got me back into photography shooting with film again. But now its digital all the way - so much cheaper and easier :)

I found it new for £341, but picked it up on ebay for £350 with spare memory cards, spare batteries, the lens hood and view finder.
It's still under a year old, under warranty, and she gave me the receipts (nearly £700 at the time of purchase).

aftermarket lenses? Really? Please tell me more...

sounds like a pretty decent deal esp with the extras.
just trawl flickr search for the DP1, youl always find photos of people trying different lenses with their cameras.
with the DP1 having an attachable lens hood, you will be able to screw lenses into it too i reckon.http://www.flickr.com/photos/slo…

The HA-11 will take lenses. you just need to measure it and find out the diameter then search ebay for cheap lenses.
For my Ricoh I got a cheap Nikon wide angle lens. I also can use my lomo LC-A fisheye lens with the Ricoh. You just need to get the right sized stepup/stepdown rings to screw in as an adaptor.
and dont be afraid to buy shit like Plastic Holga Fisheye lenses and try them out with the camera.
makes digital photography a lot more fun :)

What about Canon IS A590? Just bought one for my parents. 8MP, its successor A1000 has 10MP but same max resolution for pics.
- bengerman0
I just received my 990is(US model) and it is perfect for a small package(fits in pocket) that can produce high quality images. Very happy with mine. There's a good number of reviews out there to help with your decision making. Good luck and enjoy whichever you end up buying.
- skt0
does this mean i don't need to send you the dlux3 photos then mike?
- moth0
I guess not Skt.
Finding stuff by camera on filckr was far easier than I remember it.

By the way, I got one, it's great for what I need. It feels nice too.
