***you guys should read the entire post***
I went on the trip over a year ago--best career move I could have made. Trip was a huge success, i'm still in close contact with the team members on that initial trip and they have been back to continue the project on 2 additional trips.
As for me, when I returned, I was broke and had a hard time freelancing/ finding real work. I made about $1,500 on a project and said "the hell with it"--so I paid what bills I had, bought a ticket to Vancouver left to find my best buddy who was up there in grad school. While I was up there I visited firms in-between sight seeing and sleeping in his RV. I met the lead guy at the interactive firm Burnkit. He sat down for a good hour and really pushed me to apply to internships/ entry level jobs at big boy agencies. So with that, I landed an internship at CP+B in Miami. I'm convinced the only reason my application stood out was my recent trip to Sudan at the time. My portfolio was pretty mediocre.
I got hired following my internship and have been fulltime at CP+B Boulder ever since. Learning a ton, and working hard! Now I just need to figure out how to get back to my brethren in Sudan. The country just officially voted to split--things could get crazy again.

the CP+B thing was pretty random. When i was broke, post my Sudan trip, i made $1,400 on a freelance website, felt rich and booked a flight to Vancouver, BC.
I went and stayed with one of my best buds from home. He was in grad school and living in an RV at the time. I was there for almost a month with $1,000 left in my bank account.
While he was in class, i roamed the city looking for freelance work, but mainly just toured studios and shook hands with people, asking advice on my book etc.
I landed at Burnkit http://burnkit.com/ and had a sit down chat with head man Josh Dunford. He basically gave me a list of big agencies with big clients and told me to shoot for an internship, or entry level gig.
CP+B was on that list. So I took his advice, filled out several applications made a silly video. Aside from making myself look like a pompous asshole, they dug the vid and I got 1 of 2 spots for their winter Design internship--ultimately leading to my hire this fall.
