Posted in the PC section by moveinspace, but I felt this definitely deserved a spot in the PV as well. Its a highly recommended read for designers at any level and is completely free to download.
Any thoughts on the content from people who have started or finished reading it?

Thanks for the nod Rushmore and I have read about half of it. It really is an essential read and has lots of good information throughout. Plus it's free! I hope some other people will find it useful.

Its a PDF version of Massimo Vignelli's book on design, The Vignelli Canon. Covers plenty of different topics including grids for letterheads, grids for books, typefaces, text alignment, scale, texture, color, responsibility, equity, timelessness, etc.
Vignelli has a huge client list, spanning the entire world and a ton of recognizable, successful work.

my first impression is that it's poorly written. I'm sure it will contain good information, but that information will be harder to grasp because of Vignelli's poor writing.

kind of ironic that as a writer he is guilty of the same ignorance of the form he criticizes unskilled designers of

Rand I agree, the writing is poor. I know English is his second language, but he's been working in the States for decades... and even if he struggles with the language, I'm sure he could afford a proofreader!
Also, the punctuation is sloppy. One of my biggest pet peeves is incorrect and inconsistent use of dashes, and this book is all over the place.
At least the ideas are sound...

I will never post a design thread for English professors ever again:)

It's a great book, it's just... ironic I guess? The sloppiness is not merely linguistic, as I mentioned above.
If I was going to publish a book of my thoughts on design, I'd sure as hell hire a proofreader. I'm a detail hound, but having fresh eyes that hold to a different set of values is a tremendous help.
