Puppy advice.

I've owned/fostered/rescued a couple of dogs before, but I have close to zero experience raising a puppy up.
Everything is going great so far, except the crate training. He hasn't pissed or shat in the house just yet, but man is he god-awful annoying when I put him in the crate at night, and throughout the day to ween him into it.
Any advice? I've been good about not shushing him, or things like that. I'm pretty good at ignoring annoying things by listening to music, but sometimes I feel so bad for him, and I don't know how to help speed the process along any. To top it off, through his constant whining, he's now starting to learn to bark, and I feel like I should be teaching him that barking is NOT okay, but at the same time, I don't want to acknowledge his whining.
Thanks in advance!

Okay, I'll ask our vet on Monday on his next check-up. Strange that they didn't mention any of this to us when we talked to them about the crate training.

don't feel bad for the dog. he will learn eventually. we just adopted a 6 year old blind dog who wailed for hours at night when we put him in his crate. he slowly adjusted and now he doesnt make a peep all night.

dogs are pack animals. He wants to be with the group. crate him during the day when you're not around. Let him be with you when you're there.

Just stick with it. Leave the crate door open and close to where you hang out during the day. Leave some toys and a few hidden treats in there. When he goes in on his own praise him like you've lost your mind. Eventually you won't be able to get him out of there. Patience is the key.

Think about it, a few days ago he as with all his brothers and sisters and mum and now... bang... all on his own, poor little thing :-(
Hot water bottle and a ticking clock as epete22 said. When I got my pup I also made sure to get a toy she'd had whilst a pup so she had a familiar smell too.
