I am looking to buy a scanner. I kinda know what i am looking for but thought I'd ask for help. I have been looking at scanners that scan at 4800 x 9600 dpi. But I have also been thinking about jumping up to something at 6400 x 9600 dpi, is this necessary and will I really be able to see the difference?
Here are a few scanners i have been looking at...
Canon CanoScan 4400F

I've had both Canon and Epson scanners. I feel that Epson has much better software included with their scanners and much better support online.

what will you be scanning?

looking for a scanner myself, but they never tell you how fast they are... they should establish a standard, like a 8.5 x 11 page at 300 dpi, how long will it take?
sick of painfully slow scans...

This should give you an idea of the type of stuff I've done in the past:

scanning your art? looks too big?
any flat finished artwork that i would have previously scanned, i now find a well lit digital photo is superior. also much better to control the lighting... i find scans of textured art sometimes have bad highlights.

I wont be scanning the larger work that i've done. Some of my work is done very small and then I scan it and work with it on the computer before I print on a large barrel printer with art paper.

i have an older Epson 4180 (4800 x 9600 dpi)... doing similar stuff and never felt limited by image size... not sure if i've even scanned anything at max.
never owned a Canon so can't compare, but the Epson software is good.

I have the canon. it a decent machine and I only paid $49 at frys. The good think about it is that it is pretty slim compared to other typical scanners so it does not take up much space.

Beware, not all scanners are supported by Leopard. Double check before you buy.
