my OsX (10.4 I think) froze on start-up, I can only see my desktop background and the little blue spotlight icon. I can move the mose but nothing really happens... how do I reeboot safely? Macbook dual (white)
please! I have work stuck in there to finish tonight..

Try holding down the power button as per 3 point and NotByHand, leave for at least 20 seconds, pull out the power cord, replace and try again. If you do manage to restart the first thing you should do is run some diagnostics or take it to the nearest Genius Bar.
