  my OsX (10.4 I think) froze on start-up, I can only see my desktop background and the little blue spotlight icon. I can move the mose but nothing really happens... how do I reeboot safely? Macbook dual (white)

  please! I have work stuck in there to finish tonight..

  Try holding down the power button as per 3 point and NotByHand, leave for at least 20 seconds, pull out the power cord, replace and try again. If you do manage to restart the first thing you should do is run some diagnostics or take it to the nearest Genius Bar.

  boot from install disc (put the install disc in the drive and press 'c' while rebooting).
  go to youruser/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.finder.plist. try to restart.

  Ok.. So I can reach my macbook via my network, time to backup now, But I tried some options taken from other support forums and nothing yet, I'll reeboot from the enstall disk and reinstall again my OS... sigh... all night long now

  this is usually pretty easy to fix...

  boot into single-user: hold command and s keys until you see a scary dark gray screen with a prompt.

  type: fsck -y
  then enter. this is filesystem check. answer yes to everything and it should fix you right up.

  • I did did.. it said Blah blah blah OK I typed "reeboot"+ return
