I haven't really felt in the mood for at least ten years. Get some mulled wine inside me and I start giving a a mild shit.

It's that time of year, a time for quiet mice, rich food and festive thread bumps.
But this year this guy is a bit busier than usual, he's got a few other things besides his annual carol concert in his diary:

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but I have trouble getting into the holiday mood at first, and it's worse since I became a dad (my first Christmas as one). It makes me realize how many children out there have absolutely nothing and wish so much for even a simple Christmas.
What that does is amplify the feeling I've had for a few years that most of my family needs absolutely nothing. I agonize over buying gifts, telling people what I want, acting surprised when I get something that isn't a surprise. This doesn't happen with all my family members, just some. I feel this rather intensely towards the beginning of December, but eventually I come around and it's fun to buy gifts.
But being a dad now, it makes me want to commit to not buying gifts for family members anymore and instead donate to a charity, do something that helps kids get some gifts and give them some happiness. I look at my daughter all the time and feel blessed to think we could spoil her rotten if we wanted to (not in a materialistic way, just in an overabundance of love in general). I feel like I'd be so much happier buying stuff for other kids instead of getting a family member some thing they don't even need.
- when i was a kid my family always went to the "angel tree" at the mall and bought some stuff for some other kids. ...we still got presents too though.sarahfailin
- uuh, so this made me tear up a little bit. funny, i'm at this pt in my life where i actually want kids (not sure how i'd handle the "want", are they persistantbklyndroobeki
- do they bug you about it?) I'd imagine if you show them this type of kindness it'll be an unforgettable experience for them to witness. whereas those gifts willbklyndroobeki
- end up on a landfill in a couple years. thanks for this post.bklyndroobeki

Strangely, I woke up the other day and I thought christmas had passed already. I was asking myself "when are they going to take the lights down already?"...
