This is one of the reasons why the US sucks!
--------------
An Oak Park family that received an Extreme Makeover for their home is now in danger of losing it to foreclosure.Larry and Judy Vardon got into financial trouble because of extensive medical bills for their youngest son, Lance. The 16-year-old is blind and autistic. His medical treatments are not covered by their insurance.

This has happened a few times before because some of the families are stupid. Most of them can't manage money. Not specifically this one, necessarily, but I keep hearing about this show about legal issues.

- well they don't realize that they have to report the gift of the house as income. Hello IRS!TheBlueOne
- Poor family suddenly has to pay tax on what? $200,000? Or whatever the house is valued at...IOW - fuckeredTheBlueOne

They should do a follow-up show, Extreme Takeover.

Don't they usually pay off the mortgage? Maybe not in this case. The other Extreme Home Foreclosure i heard of, the family mortgaged the house that the show had built and paid for to start their own business, which tanked.

Yup, I agree this situation seems sad, and there are definitely issues with health care here. But the US is still a great place to live....we've just got issues like every other country in the world.
Like Jaline said, most of the time it's because people are horrible at managing money....and just plain irresponsible. This is kind of like a microcosm of socialism and exactly why it doesn't work.

I can tell you that the story is leaving something out. Like the pulled equity out of the paid off house and bought toys, then medical bills hit and so did a mortgage. Screwed.
I love the show and what they do but this is what happens when you give uneducated people money or things they didnt work for. The should also take financial classes to learn how to manage these situations.
- This is no different than some poor guy winning the lottery then losing all the money.epete22

A family that had their house rebuilt on "Extreme Makeover" in Camden, NJ recently had their house foreclosed on as well!

@ Gifto. They have to one-up all the other houses that are being built :P Yeah the houses they build are seriously ridiculous.
Nothing seems to be built anymore unless it's some huge $250,000 - $350,000+ house. I hope American learns quickly that this isn't a "right" to own such a house. I think the developers forgot about the "working man" who just wants a nice modest he can actually afford to live in. I would like to see all these developments burn down honestly (without people in them of course)

yeah that sux. people are stupid though (sometimes).
i have a friend who gave his immediate family members (mom+dad, 2 brothers and a sister) 10k each as he does very well for himself. everyone but his one brother paid off credit cards and car payments. while his eldest brother bought a 50k pickup which 6 months later he couldn't afford to drive, then had the nerve to ask his brother for more money.
i feel sorry for him. and i have no sympathy for the people who get free things and do stupid things with it.
