Anyone have any real life stories of people who have left the design industry and where they ended up. I knew a graphic designer who left and is now a teacher (not a lecturer in design but a "standard" school teacher). Most other people I know just talk about leaving but haven't gone yet.
Any real life profiles to share?

my boss friend, whom used to be a really hot copywriter, got his savings moved to venezia and bought a restaurant, now he's making a lot more cash just doing what he liked to do.

your question brings up images of being trapped in a bright white room with scared children wondering if we should leave the television just cus that short old lady with the sweet creaky voice is talking about it.
i'm sure lots of people leave less dramatically.

I was really trying to see whether there was any kind of trend, in that creative people may continue to do creative work all their life or do they fine themselves doing more philanthropic work.
I spend a lot of time looking at a screen and wonder if it would be better working outdoors in a more physical job - I'm not sure if I could do it, but it would nevertheless be very different from what I now do so in that sense it is an interesting idea.- i think about that a lot as well. when i am involved tactically i feel happier._salisae_

A creative director of a major London advertising agency gave it all up and opened an amazing eat-in bakery place down in Lyme Regis. It is/was a really cool place. They bake speciality breads and filled breads, and pizzas and stuff like that, and just pile it all up on long tables. You pay to eat and just go and rip chunks of whatever you want off.
Its all great in theory, but he's apparently something of an arsehole who badly mistreats people... staff and customers as well as locals and neighbours, so the local community is slowly turning against him and his business and quietly trying to kill it off.
He spent so long being an aggressive player in a cut throat business that he doesn't seem to be able to re-adjust to the slower, more egalitarian village life.

I snap every 5 years and leave design. Last time, it was to sell drugs to children - this time, it's ... well, I'm not leaving design, just changing tack. I'm going to make doilies and lamp shades for a burgeoning middle class that is no longer burgeoning.

Horp, that sounds like someone down here too. He's a twatt who treats staff and customers badly. Came from adverstising background and now runs a restuarant. He's not liked but he seems too have pots of cash so he can continue to make mistakes and stay in business.

if you were independently wealthy, would you continue to design?

I have left the industry, now I only illustrate for myself and do one or two identities a year for friends starting things up. I miss aspects of it but love my current job and know that its contributing to the greater good...
- Hey there, fella - so what ARE you doing these days?Nairn
- Oh.

I see. Well done, you!Nairn - weren't you the one who found that scalp just outside your house? that was disgusting._salisae_
- ha ha no not me at all though I was an avid reader of that thread. I now work for a company that has set out to create a ethical index that hopefully aligns with a companies / organisations share index. Essentially making them more transparent
Kidswift - No, that was toulouz - Kidswift's the green-tinged antipodean in London who flies a lot.NO, that was toulouz - Kidswift's the green-tinged antipodean in London who flies a lot.Nairn

- heh, I'm still a twat, no worry there! :) Glad to see you're doing something useful with yourself.Nairn
- Yeah it makes a nice change ;) I actually miss your constant banter, its caused a side effect of feeling good about what I am doing obviously I am remedying this through self harm and mutilation....Kidswift

I was just about to ask out of curiosity, how do you fap not by hand..

I left design actually, although I'm still in the area as an illustrator so I don't suppose it really counts. I left design when it finally became apparent that it would all be done through a computer screen.

I'm thinking about leaving but it's because I'm childish and don't work well with other people because I am idealistic with things i create. I figure if I'm at least honest about my intentions then wherever I end up will make me happiest.

The sad truth is that 90% of jobs these days involve slaving away in front of a screen.

thinking about it...or at least stepping back and taking only freelance I want. There are a few great moments when work is really satisfying but then the rest of the time feels a bit pedestrian...seems it more often than not comes down to being limited by someone else's fear of anything beyond mediocre.
- Don't bank on freelance clients being any different.jamble
