Anyone been through these parts? I'm thinking of taking a trip there to find my mother's family roots. It keeps flipping back and forth between Germany and now France. Quite fantastic from what I've heard.

- Hee, hee, no really, I'm going with a cousin at the beginning of the year if all things go right.********

I know there is a museum (or something) where you can see some drawings from Tomi Ungerer (http://www.musees-strasbourg.or... In Strasbourg. Never been there (it was closed when I get there...) but I'm quite sure it's really amzing.

Yes, Strasbourg isn't far from a little town called Lembach. That's where I'm headed.
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=le…I should be able to see quite a bit of both France and Deutschland.
- Don't forget to try all the local beers once there. French, german, belgium and luxemburgish beers !vsplus

It is lovely. You could cayak the meuse downstream for a couple of days, quite a few nice villages, castles and caves to visit on the way. Beautiful woods too.
- ok, I'm going to dig up my family records. As long as I get drunk and eat good food, I'm satisfied********
- Hahahahahahaa ! I think it must be freezing outside right now, so cayaking may not be a great idea !! Maybe after getting drunk and full of local cuisine ! maybe...vsplus
- yeah, well I'm going in January, it's gonna be cold I would think.********
- yes. I´d advise against cayaking in january.********

It is pretty picturesque and cute. Food is the cross you'd expect between German and French cuisine. All of the buildings are of the tudor style but painted bright colours.
Colmar is really nice and not as touristy as, say Strassbourg — though that may have changed. I haven't been in twenty years or so.
There's a saying down there which goes: "Speak French to the people and German to the animals."

My sister lives there, in France. It is a shame I only went there once, to her wedding. I'll get some info if you want.
They moved from Paris to a small village, bought ruins of an old house and have been restoring it for a few years. Not a bad lifestyle choice.
The village is lovely and stinks properly with cow shit.

hey jazx, your mom was alsacienne? my father was born there as well, and we used to travel to that region every year growing up. it's lovely...you have to see the lorraine cross of course, and the countryside is quite lovely.
- My Mom's family was from Alsace when it was Germany. I'm talking 1765 time period, but my surname exists there.********

Alsace is quaint. Lembach is lovely. You must try the Tarte flambee > pizza base ultra thin - creme fraiche - cheese (cottage cheese) - bacon - onions...lovely...then fresh made Pretzel (Bretzels over there). Take pics of the houses and all the flowers.....you will love it.
Also, Colmar, Strasbourg, Reischoffen, Haguenau...etc
