  anyone got a new macbook pro with a ssd drive,
  working on 1gb+ files in photoshop,
  and care to share the experience in term of speed?

  Worth buying a SSD drive seperatly and installing it later?

  Current SSDs hold a certain number of advantages over platter-based drives. They are:
  1. Heat
  2. Noise
  3. Shock resistance
  4. Seek times

  At this stage the type of SSD drives you'd be looking at (ie. not the most expensive ones out there) lend no real advantages to designers/developers working on larger files. Read speed is actually slower on SSD for this kind of file than SATA.

  So unless the other advantages of SSD really mean a lot to you, don't waste your time. You'll be paying a lot for a drive without as much storage as a platter, without any discernible advantages for regular users.

  My recommendation for additional high-quality high-volume storage is an external NAS box with eSATA and firewire800, software RAID'ed in RAID 1 mirror for redundancy.

  Thanks Buddhahat,
  I know of those advantages.
  But I don't agree on the notion that they are actually slower than mechanical drives, but that's just from my reading articles.
  And not only startup time - in applications too.

  The latest set of drives out there, at least, seems to be faster in that aspect. Since apple don't really offer any details on their SSD drives it's hard to know tho - if it's the same speeds as the drive in their air-model then...screw it.

  Recently did a lot of research on these, and its definitely something you should wait on.

  Theres no reason unless your dealing with some epic data that you just can't afford to lose, when backing up isn't a safe enough option.

  Agreed. A few years from now SSD will be everywhere.
  It will be faster, it will be cheaper, and it will be -good-.

  But there is wait. And I'm a impatient kind of guy.

  Consider pondering on this formula, sir, for a minute.

  This drive, for example, is 128 just as Apples. Seems faster and it goes for about 50,000 yen (I have no idea what currency that would be in your country. Let's say 500 dollars):

  So what about the Apple drive? There is almost no info on how fast the new models are. Benchmarks aren't really around.

  So dear sir, this begs the inevidable and somewhat horny (not related) question...

  Got a drive from Photofast. The specs are just about as good as the Samsung you posted (slightly faster read, slightly slower write)

  It's incredible.

  Got the new mbook pro with a processor upgrade.
  Changed into that drive;
  Booting up OSX takes seconds.
  Firing up CS4...3-4 seconds.

  Doesn't make a sounds. Book won't go too hot.
  It's a freaking delight. You've got to try it out.

  Prices've dropped tremendously.
