Coming to NY in a few days and looking to pick up a new lens for my Canon 20D while I am there.
The two I am split over are:
Canon 50mm 1.4 USM (about $320)
Sigma 30mm 1.4 (about $439)Does anyone have any advice and experience of which is the better lens. I don't have a huge budget obviously and both these seem to be quite well rated.

Depends on what you shoot more?
It's hard to go wrong with either of those. The fifty makes a nice portrait lens with that crop-factor.

Better for what?

I'd go with the 50mm

Agreed, 50/1.4 is a must and the 30mm is sweet. I have a 17-55/2.8 IS for sale, the best lens in this range, period. But the price and location is European..

Or there is the Canon 35mm 2.0 I suppose... thoughts?

Agree w/ canuck. If you want to do buildings you'll probably want a wider lens than the 30mm. The sigma 14mm is great, as is the 12-24mm zoom.

Sounds like it should be the 50mm Canon then :)

I would get the sigma 50mm f1.4 haha. I have this lens and its awesome. The smoothest bokeh I have ever seen and much less busy than the canon 50mm 1.4.
You need to get from a shop though as I got a bad one online from bhphotovideo and had to return it. Second one I bought locally is mint.
- That's good to know. How is it in low light?Mimio
- Its ok, does miss quite a lot at f1.4 but I put this down to the subjects and myself moving, the DOF is so so narrow at that end.slappy
- Pic of my girl at f2.8, straigh of my camera, no processing, just shot in jpg on my 5D.

the sigma is a good lense and performs nicely, but you lose the smooth rotation while focusing. It's not so big a deal but it grated on me enough to ditch the sigma.

The sigma has ring type USM AF and 9 aperture blades, 77mm filter size (common on canons L range) solid construction and comes with a lens hood, the Canon has slow micro USM, 8 aperture blades, busy bokeh, cheap construction, no hood.
The sigma is much closer to the canon 50mm f1.2L in construction, IQ but not quite as accurate at focusing. I have used a friends 50mm f1.2 a lot but cant justify the cost right now.

the 50/1.4 is a classic standard lens, it's like helvetica for type. get that, you'll love it.

Now I am really confused... Canon 50mm 1.4 or Sigma 50mm 1.4?
