Anyone know the best software for rotoscoping footage, or is after effects masks the best way?
- vivid0
yeah...either after effects of combustion. AE is my choice though...just use keyframes and masks and a lot eye bleeding patience!

- I invested in a graphics tablet...helped in the long run but still a painfull task.vivid
- indeed, I use a tablet and every so often my hand totally spazzes out and I have to shakechossy

Commotion is in my opinion best for this, it is like photoshop for film.

depending on the footage you are working on you could use auto trace in AE.

I think you could also try TVPaint Animation Pro or Studio or whatever.

Whats your framerate? you could lower it to decrease the amount of frames you have to deal with, then frame-bleed it all together. This could potentially half your workload....
worth a shot...

Check out Hugh's Buck 65 rotoscope, he filmed him, broke it down into a jpeg sequence, printed them out, traced them, scanned them in, and put them back into flash.

how about for print? Is there an easy way to get this done other than tracing and all on PS or Illy?
- CALLES0
how many frames do you have? or seconds?
- OSFA0
me? No frames, it will be for print. I need to get an ad to look rotoscoped.
- OSFA0
any ideas?

OSFA, what do you mean by "look rotoscoped?" Got an example?

Ah, I see what you mean. That look that mimics if a frame has been painted - type of thing.
If it's not moving, I suppose a combination of LiveTrace in Illy and simply hand painting (or mousing) the image itself.
For motion, there are filters/plugins that do this, but everything I've seen looks a bit wonky.

export footage as jpeg sequence>filter using PS of illy, then re-import as sequence into AE

that isn't rotoscoping, it's cartooning.
toonit is a plug in for after effects and that was used to create those
if you know illustrator, you could also do it there if it's just one image- Correct, but it could INVOLVE rotoscoping if pulling from frames.harlequino

Yeah, I've been playing with it in Illy and now decided to move to PS so that I can play with it and make it smoother. Thanks guys!
