Tonight I'm building a bonfire. Do I start small and add to it as it takes, or do I build it big and just chuck a match in?

use lots of lighter fuel

build it big, in layers, with all the sticks going in the same general direction. interweave with newspaper strips and light it up.

We'll be building big then . . .

yeah, I guess it's the same principle as building a coal fire in your house. you start with newspaper (catches alight easily) then on top of that you put kindling, small bits of wood and then ontop of that you put your coal/logs. You basically have make the fire in stages. So start with stuff that's gonna light easily and then build on top of that in stages.

Make sure to check for any pets hiding in there before you light it... and if there's none, find some.

Pallets, tyres and cans of petrol help immensely.

You are gonna need shit-loads of petrol tonight my friend. Damp wood doesn't make for a good Bommy...

yeah, loads of people do! I live in Greenwich and loads of the old houses there have real fires. It's great. Although probably not that good for the environment, but you can get smokeless coal which is better apparently.
