Adobe vs. the rest

I'm just curious. I've worked with Coreldraw, Paint Shop Pro, QuarkXpress and some other more obscure programs - and of course Adobe. Should we be happy Adobe is practically owning our workflows? DVD's, Flash, print, photography, post-production, websites, you name it. It's somewhat of a monopoly, isn't it? Though standardization is very useful (long live the PDF), we are at the mercy of one large corporation. Or am I being paranoid?

Video Edting and post-production - there is a choice: Avid and FinalCut, Shake

^^^ aye that's true. Mocha, Boujou, TVPaint, Avid, FinalCut. But I do love Premiere personally and of course; After Effects...

the CS4 master collection upgrade is damn expensive indeedily.
but what's the alternative.

well, do you feel there is still room for improvement in their products? do you find yourself getting frustrated using photoshop wishing a feature was easier to use?
i don't they have a monopoly, i think that they've just listened well to their customers and the customers show their support with their money. all six paychecks of it.

i think we should be happy to have an ever growing library of software that is trying to streamline and standardize what we do.
imagine if professionals all used something different. i use PS you use corel draw someone else paint shop... then we all get to deal with the clusterfuck that comes with editing other designers work.
if adobe wasn't the best they wouldn't be industry standard and if something better comes out smart professionals will get with the program as they did with adobe.

Their market specialized that it is under the radar for anti-trust.

^^^ all valid points and I agree. It's so easy to have this standardization. No other softwarebaker comes close. But the fact is that you have to pay about 4000 euro's if you need it all.
- you don't have to pay a dime if you don't want to.doesnotexist
- true, i never have.anxiousarms

Pre photoshop 5 era - there was a choice between Adobe and Corel, but now Adobe is in different space, much more further, but it does not change the fact thst is still fucking expensive

well, i guess if you don't like it you could always clean houses. Then you only have to pay for a mop and a bucket and cleaner. if you were an auto mechanic you'd buy the best tools you needed to get your job done.
i think you're worry is needless. no offense :)
- think about what the best of us get PAID to do what we do for crying out loud!anxiousarms
- no WONDER adobe wants their cut!anxiousarms

Does "the best things in life are free" apply to Adobe then?

How dare you criticize Adobe!

What happened to that suite of creative apps that were being developed for online use? I think there were invites involved. Anyone remember? They looked pretty powerful.

Does anybody use opensource or otherwise free software? Such as the GIMP? I do use OpenOffice for the boring chores.
- i'd wager their are but they aren't getting paid for the work they do.anxiousarms

does adobe innovate? or do they just try to justify their high costs?
- ESPtype0
Nobody is making you use these programs... Design has been around far before adobe... How do you think people did things before computers?
- Llyod0
also, I have to say that pdf is a piece of shit. It takes forever to load and scroll though.

"does adobe innovate? or do they just try to justify their high costs? "
this is my one problem with them. they always bring up the issue of piracy as a justification of their high costs. ironically, it's the high costs that are responsible for so many of the cracks available.
- speaking of which, when does CS4 after effects come out?Llyod

Flash has crashed on me about 20 times today... totally ruins the flow of doing anything
