Had a small agency contact me out of the blue and they want me to design for them. They quickly sent over a very detailed work agreement/contract and stated that they compensate via direct deposit. I signed a W9 and they want a copy of a voided check.
Is this a standard practice, they have my SSN and want my bank account number and I feel a little uneasy about giving them all this info. I've done a lot of searching for them and haven't found anything that would raise a red flag.
Advice regarding how I proceed - I just feel a bit uneasy.

yes it is, no worries. they need the routing numbers on your check as well.

Um...yeah I would be a little skeptical of that. Why would they only do direct deposit? Wouldn't it be just as easy, if not easier for them to just cut you a check?

no worries mate. it's a void check, need to verify the numbers - standard in many places

Wake up your bank manager and ask him what he thinks.

That's weird. It's almost like you're being treated as a full time employee.
You could always just ask to be paid by cheque.

Just read the detailed work agreement and make sure there is no clause that says, "By providing account information, employee agrees to sign over entire contents of bank account to agency."

a lot of small studios do that since banks give them a break on fees.

This has happened to me as well. I prefer to get mailed checks, and will tell them so, but my experience with direct deposits has been positive.
