Looking for advice from others, is it really that bad out there for the nyc design economy? I've been looking, perhaps In the beginning I had too high of expectations, but its been four months now. I've yet to find anything with real career potential. I haven't used any job placement agencies, could someone suggest me a few that I could look up? Thanks. I've been freelancing for two years by word of mouth and recommendation, July came and ouch! Any other similar situations out there?

LinkedIn.com (best thing so far for me)
Craigslist.com (Surprising a lot of the major ad agencies post here although it may be anonymous).
Current clients (ask them if they know other agencies/clients that need design. If you're in good standing, you'd be surprised how many of them are willing to help out).
- Thanks! I just contacted some old CDs... maybe something will come up.marchelo

use job placement agencies. you might do better being introduced, rather than trying to scrounge for gigs on your own.

i found more gigs on my own, than using job placement agencies. actually got a lot of calls after posting my portfolio on creative hotlist. seems like a lot of people are hiring in nyc, regardless of the economy.

Its true, NYC is hiring. I've turned down two jobs paying decent money. Maybe It's me, perhaps I don't want to be here anymore and want to start my own studio somewhere... good point. But how can you tell. I've never used job placement agencies either and I've always had work, until recently. Something doesn't add up. I was holding out for something really good, I just haven't found it yet. MY background is fashion and editorial design. Editorial never paid that great to begin with.

Oh, sorry I meant that I heard that "Cosmo Girl Folded" a Hearst magazine. Is that true? If so, I heard others may be on the way before the end of the year.

WTF!!??? It's true. http://www.observer.com/2008/med…
How does one of the most successful magazine companies like Hearst fold something like cosmo girl? I always thought stuff like that was money in the bank. Thats 3 magazines in 4 months, not counting prior, and probably more to come.

Alpinist folded last week too. It was the climbing worlds version of Surfers Journal, great photography, great design, great writing. Too bad.

Any agency suggestions? Oh, and I saw this as a job description, hmmm. "Upload files and write instructions for OFFSHORE team" Offshore team meaning people in India working for 3.55 an hr. Or is this referring to something else?

You need a website. And also, get a website.

oh FUCK NO! I did not turn down jobs to work for that bullshit pay... Thanks though, I'd rather retire from design, and become a teacher.
