Its better to have the shit job early in your career, in my opinion.
One of my first jobs as a graphic designer was at a print shop.
The hours were long, the work was shitty, the company wasn't very stable... and to be honest I wasn't very knowledgeable about pre-press and troubleshooting other peoples work...
eventually they gave me design projects and I did my best to make those projects shine. In the end it was a great character and work building experience.
The key is knowing when its time to leave. I worked there for about a year. It was the right move to leave at that time.
Good luck.

Its just to keep me running really as im drinking Nisa Heritage mixed fruit squash out of a robinsons orange bottle.
I have made a couple of poster alot better than what they could have been through the art of persuation. i will see if i can dig them out.

- you was really ambitious and hunted jobs down then?rybo
- Nope, I got a job which paid money and didn't take up all my time so I could concentrate on my studieschossy
- After I finished, I got a job making tea for people, for a year and didn't complain.chossy
- I then moved up to doing tape copies then a year or two later I moved up to doing basic editschossy
- then a year after that the company I worked for collapsed so I set up a new one with my old boss.chossy
- While working there a different company asked me to join them which I did. So here I am.chossy

So you are currently studying at University but you have a daytime job as well. When I was a student I was in the studio from 10 till 5ish 5 days a week, letterpress, screen printing, working out photoshop or just mingling and working with other graphics students. How do you find the time?
Also quoting Dominic Lippa (now partner at Pentgram): "Working for a bad company is like an illness... get out and cure it quick"

Everyone's gotta start somewhere, it's not good to have an inflated ego. Work there for a while, you'll learn a lot, even if it's as simple as 'I never want to work at a printers again' it's all valuable experience. It's a job at the end of the day, it pays the bills, your going to get work in the future that you might hate but your going to have to do, it's not all logos, music posters and autism design books. Stick it out for a while, future employers will appreciate that you got yourself a design related job whilst at uni and not opted for JD Sports.

lol cheers jimbo made me chuckle...
All in all seriousness my life is design im always doing something design related i made the mrs a blog last night lol might be a mistake if she starts sharing secrets with the world and all that.
but ye i thought it would look good on a CV to have first hand experience designing at a printers and just a design role in general.
and i only went for this job because i worked in QUBE shoes (no square footwear) and it closed down
- i could list the things i have on right now.rybo
- Imo: your CV will not pay your bills, your skills will, so try to learn all you can even if this job's nothing special... and steal some paper...ItalianStallion

You have a lot of side-work. If you truly hate your 9-to-5, quit and freelance for yourself. The worst thing you can do is stick it out at a job that you absolutely detest. It just stifles your creativity and your productivity.
If you can manage to get by with your freelance work, then do it.
- dMullins0
Another thing to consider is whether or not you're learning at your job, and how much that matters to you if you are. Are you learning trade-skills that you'll carry through your career, and that will improve your technical knowledge?
- rybo0
I don't want to go full steam ahead freelance right now as i would rather get distinctions for my HND, and no i really dont think im learning anything new im sitting here twiddling my thumbs till the boss comes and tells me to design something. BUT im getting paided!
- i'd spend every available minute you have learning how to write good english.Bluejam

Pfft. I'm with chossy. I spent 4 years pulling pints and mopping beer off floors.
Learn about print. You'll need that experience and most graduates don't have it.

Stay calm man. You're still at college! You're doing all this extra stuff...you don't wanna come across as too intense. I did shit classifieds for a Northern farming paper straight after graduating...
