I've never really done one, partially out of not wanting to spend time on something that you don't get rewarded/paid for and I like to eat... and partially because there's soo many other good people out there...
Anyone ever had any luck doing design work for contests whether it be for t-shirts, or posters, or for logos and such?

I entered a couple of competitions when I was a bit younger. I won the Airisde tee Olympics one year and got a tshirt made that went on sale in their online shop. Also got some artwork featured on a Muse single. A couple of other smaller things too.
I don't do them anymore for the reason you mentioned.

I've never tried - but I imagine you'd have the satisfaction of keeping the work in your portfolio whether you win or not. Nice to have a job that the client can't fuck up;D

I won too many competitions to name, they help build your name in the industry but after a while it is who you know and not what you do that will land you the work.

It feels like I'm breaking rules when I do design work for myself cause there's no one there to tell you they want it changed... maybe that's why it's so hard to finish the stuff sometimes.

I'd encourage you to try, it's a good exercise and will improve your other work!

if you've got the time to do stuff then why not go for it.
and if you win then thats a little pack on the back for yourself for knowing that the stuff you are knocking out is better than what others were doing.I'd have imagined that the Airside tshirt comp that Jnr won wouldve had some really good entries from talented designers and illustrators. Good on you for winning that man! :)
