who has wamu?
I just looked at my account online at 12:30AM and saw that my biweekly payroll deposit had gone through. under that deposit was one overdraft charge for a previous purchase kind of annoyed that I overdrafted and had
to pay a $33 fine.. but whatever.I check back 10 minutes later and see 4 more transactions had gone through before the payroll transaction. what the fuck?!
I know for a fact that those transactions wouldn't have posted until tomorrow. Wamu essentially took back the deposit after the fact, applied the debits, and reapplied the deposit.I now owe $165 in bullshit overdraft fees. anyone ever have to talk their way out of bank fees?

you can do it, just call them up and use your "church voice".
- TheBlueOne0
Call them.

Yeah, you're probably not going to get out of these unless you really bully them. My understanding (and experience) with overdrafting is that it is solely your responsibility to prevent overdrafting on your account.
You may recieve notices (usually way after the fact) from your bank too.
You can get overdraft protection from most banks for your account but you usually have to have a credit line through them with a decent amount of credit available for the overdraft.
There is always a catch-22 to overdrafting too. Read the fine print.

tell them you will close your account if all but the first fee are refunded.

Every bank I have been with runs the transactions before the deposits. I'm sure all those fees build up nicely for them.

banks do this shit all the time, thats how they make money. They hold larger withdrawls until the end to make you overdraft even if the larger amount was the first one to the account.
If you do the savings account thing as noted above they still charge you $12 but thats better than $33...
You can probably get them to give some back if you call them.

Oh wait...WaMu? Oh, you're fucked.
- landock0
that's how banks fuck you. they apply pending charges before deposits. I believe every major bank does this. So even though time-wise the deposit comes before the withdrawals it doesn't matter because they were posted after official bank hours. When they "officially" open they would have done the same thing so what you saw online was them just reflecting what would have been the procedure in the morning.

what i noticed about wamu is that they'll purposefully NOT process several hundred dollars worth of purchases until about 5 minutes before your paycheck is deposited ("pending charges" that DON'T show up on their site, or show up then disappear), then hit you with multiple overdraft fees.
once in college they gave me 11 overdraft charges at once
another time a charge went through AFTER my check was deposited and they STILL gave me an overdraft charge
i hate banks
they're like an enforced, unnecessary evil
like insurance

im definitely calling but im assuming they arent going to do shit about it. what can i possibly say/threaten to get them to to waive those fees?
- scarabin_net0
they wouldn't do shit for me, good luck
this is how they make up for "free checking"
...by being professional assholes

your history is your creditability. If you do not have a history of overdraft fees perhaps they will negotiate with you on the fees occurred from the strange timing of deposits and withdrawal. Perhaps negotiate with them 1/2 of the fees. In honesty, times are kinda tough, try to get empathy from the representative and remember you are talking to a human being. I hope this helps.

pffft why use a bank? I carry all my cash with me...
- ETM0
Holy crap, you guys pay mad overdraft fees. Is that typically in the US banks?

I had a similar situation with Wamu. Just go in to the branch where the account was open and ask to speak with a manager. My fees were waived as a first time courtesy. Don't threaten or anything. Just act as you were not aware. It shouldn't be a problem if this is your first time.

My buddy called up, and it took him about three times until he got somebody who took pity on him and reversed the fees. My advice, if the first person is a jerk, then call back and try again. But make sure you are calm, and very courteous each time. You don't want to act like an a-hole because they can write notes in the computer about your previous calls, and then it will be harder.

In japan it is not uncommon to be paid in cash by your boss on payday, most people do not use credit cards and many businesses don't accept them. No one knows what a personal check is. They use bank transfers to pay large sums.

something similar happened to a colleague of mine coffeesoy. their system is either archaic or intentionally programmed to do this. she received 4 overdraft charges at noon after depositing a cheque at 9am. it was crap.

Most banks will refund 1/2 of the fees if you just sound sad and ask nice unless you do it regularly and they think your a loser.
- also do it in person and if you can cry that will help.lackofcolor
- but they talk in a condescending tone about it: "We'll do you a favor THIS time Mr. ______."Point5
