I'm on the hunt for some good people (based in London/UK) to approach for some usability/UI advice.
I've got lists of web/graphic design agencies coming out of my ears, but these aren't the people I'm looking for. I guess I'm looking for "information architects" - but my limited experience of them has been that they're mostly a bunch of charlatans.
Any pointers?

Well, to be honest, you're right to think they're a bunch of charlatans, because, for the most part, they are.
Depending on what you are looking for:
A decent designer will be able to handle the IA of a site as 'user experience' is and should be firmly part of the designers remit.
If you need someone to conduct testing, then usually someone with a psychology degree or someone with a decent degree in HCI should be who you are after. By decent I mean, somewhere from a decent University, not some "4 week course at the Hoxton Academy of Usability". Only these people can apply the scientific method need to interpret data appropriately.

Shoot me an email I'm (very very soon to be) out of work and I live in E2 so I'm pretty central with quite a bit of spare time if it's the lovely free spoken word you're after.
