So I live in a place far away from televisions and radios.

    That's wrong;
there's plenty of televisions and radioes here.
But none of them plays that much music from the "west" (let's say Yuerup and the Americas). Instead it's very much only local flavours mixed in with 1 song or 2 in the top 20 list that is in English.

Which is why I am very, very out of touch with what -you- hip kids listens too. These days, and let's say the last 5 years or so.

    So,
any one care to drop some bandnames?
    Very obvious ones are welcome.

Oh, and, by all means, feel free to mock my out-of-touch-ness.

I need a little help here, do you mean pop hits that anybody would know by living in america, europe? Not necessarily the ones you would call your favorites? yes?

If so you might want to check out Ms. Kate Perry. She´s had a huge hit with "i kissed a boy" and apart from that it´s a super-song.

    Thank you.

Yes, popular songs people would know,
but not -all- the crap that is out there. I trust the music taste of most qbn'ers, and their filtering capabilities of said crap.

    To give you a perspective...
I've only heard, say, Coldplay, last week. At Tower records. Never heard them before that. Not seen em on tv, no posters or whatnot.
It's like crawling out from under some kind of rock.

    To further this perspective,
I don't own a tv. I threw it out one day.
Of course now, few years later, I am both happy yet enraged by having done that.

Anyways, do keep the advice coming.

Check out the top songs from MTV.com and MuchMusic.
    http://www.muchmusic.com/tv/coun…

Currently, the most popular genres with younger people are hip/hop, R&B, and "emo". All of these are infused with "pop" music.

I wish I could throw away my television.

    Check this out: http://peoplesmusicstore.com

It's essentially a recommendation service - people can curate their own stores. My store: http://peoplesmusicstore.com/det…

Check out Tricky, Tetine, Roots Manuva... I'm playing them an awful lot...

      Will do.
As for the television - it certainly has its upsides and downsides. Try it for a month?
