Anyone care to share how the article thumbnails are achieved here at QBN, with the 'Editors Choice' section. How do you just display 6 articles + feature and then cycle through to the next 6. Is it jQuery &/or Ajax or something else? Wanting to achieve a similar thing using textpattern.

then your best bet is to find out how to do it in textpattern. the method will vary greatly depending on the platform and is so platform specific as to make it pointless comparing one with the other - if you've already chosen the build app.
i use wordpress and it's a very common option for many of the new 2.5 wp magazine style themes.
the best option is to look through the template sites and find one that replicates what you're after and copy that basic construction.

The reloading is done with Ajax (they could be using jQuery, which is just a javascript library which also uses Ajax).
The page holds an offset which records which offset the page is currently on. Then a javascript is used to call a back-end script which does a call to the database to get items from offset to offset+5 with a sql-query. Then either the back-end script shapes the database-anwsers into html and sends that back to the javascript or the the back-end script makes a JSON-object and send that back to javascript which in turn makes the html for the page.

Thanks guys, yeah I'm not really a dev type so have posted similar Q on Textpattern to see what others have come up with more specific to my platform of choice. By the sounds of what neverblink was saying going to need some custom script to tackle the offset. Think this will be the main crux for designer like myself. Any specific links airey?

Thinking of calling all the articles at once and then using this jQuery plug to cycle through them. Now to see if I can get it to sing with some TXP tags/
