Why on earth would a 12 minute video take 36 hours to encode? Keep in mind, this is on a 2.1ghz iMac. My mom is trying to make some stupid dvd and won't stop bothering me about it..
I don't know much, so I'm doing my best to give her a few tips..

effects added? - blurs really increase rendering times...
outputting the right codec, size and frame rate?

seriously...what are you making it on...the dvd...
idvd?
because i hate idvd..
it always verifies and it takes FOREVERRRR

i don't think she's doing any effects. the closest thing would be digital juice, which is just overlays, right? i'll try and make sure she's using the right codecs. although, i don't think she knows enough to mess with them...
the problem is, she's a few states over, so it's not like i could pop in to help her out.
no idvd... not even to that point yet.

Does the source material use different codecs, framerates, etc? FCP takes it’s time converting these. This can happen when footage comes from multiple origins/devices.

one issue may be that she's encoding from an encoded video and probably using a different encoder from the original video. it's much faster to encode from a raw video file.

if you both have ichat you could take over her machine and see what she has going on. sounds like the video isn't matching the timeline settings and it has to render the resolution to fit whatever she has in the timeline settings. make sure they match.
