illustrator users: anyone know a trick to quickly change the color of a black and white pattern tile WITHOUT having to edit the original swatch vectors?

i'm thinking their must be some technique with an overlay color field combined with transparency, but haven't been able to figure it out.

i know effect Lighten will invert my pattern's blacks to white, but i'd like to quickly experiment with colors without having to create new swatches.

    any ideas?

I'm no Pro, but I do know that using quick layer mode hacks is ok to change EITHER black or white, but not both at the same time, without fiddling around with masks, which would kind of defeat the point.

You can't edit the spot colours in a swatch pattern? (I don't have Illy open just now, so can't remember)

    • yeah i could edit the swatch 1x with a spot color and adjust globally that way, but was looking for something even more flexiblehorton1/3
      more quick/ flexiblehorton2/3
Ah, sorry - you did say that. I dunno - I'd flatten the fucker and have an array of 'em set up, with diff. colours in each.Nairn3/3

live color, but change the colors in your pattern to something else than B/W first, otherwise it won't work.

    Quick way:

Select same fill color, change color (as long as the pattern color doesn't appear anywhere else on the page).

    • Click pattern first.5timuli1/4
Select I mean. Jesus, I should go back to bed.5timuli2/4
yeah but i'm experiment with the Neubau bookload of swatches, would rather not have to re-setup each swatch as spothorton3/4
      ... re-setup each swatch as spot, they're all B&W off teh diskhorton4/4

Could you not just put the color you want to try in a shape (box) underneath your pattern layer, select both objects and make an opacity mask, select clip and invert mask to make black the color chosen, or leave unchecked to make white areas the color chosen.

i shoulda clarified; i'm playing with literally 100's of black and white pattern tiles from Neubau, so would rather not have to edit each one i try into a spot color.

    really thought there'd be a layer/ overlay/ transparency trick... ?

damn ... ESKEMA that works pretty good, just too bad all these swaches are just black/ 100K and need some CMY in order to tweak.

    thx for the tip.

    • damn, sounds interesting - and like I need to tinker with CS3!Nairn1/2

^^ no they don't, I did it without changing swatches,

click the color reduction icon (next to presets in live color window) and uncheck preserve: white, blacks
after that you can change the black to wathever color you chose and tweak it

    yup that works Eskema, thx!

Alice too... thx! edit colors/ adjust balance works on a B&W tile for quick slider CMYK adjustment.

still wish there was a layer/transp/overlay technique, but i may have to let that go.
