Im about to pull the trigger and get a Imac. I do print a web design and really dont know my shit when it comes to hardware. Is there a huge difference between 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and the 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Du? I was thinking refurbished!

nope....in 2 years there will be no difference @ all.
Save your money and get more ram....
- cramdesign0
0.26 is the exact difference.
not likely worth the extra cash... ram is a better investment if you must save.

dont waste your money on an imac... a macbook pro is just as sufficient for print production... even better yet.. get a desktop, a g5 or whatever they ar enow

dont get an imac

I have a mac book(5 years old and its almost dead) pro but dont want to spend the money on a new one and have to get an external screen. The imac seems like such a deal
- d_rek0
imacs are basically the apple equivalent of a family pc... good for browsing the web and checking email, not really meant for process instensive applications and production work
- Mmm, wrong, they work great, the old ones though, now that is a different story.NONEIS
- Sorry, i just can't recommend imacs for any type of production work.d_rek
- Seen even newer ones slow to a crawl - especially with high resolution / large format video and photo files.d_rek
- Sorry, I hate to keep disagreeing, but I think you know not what you speak of, as I have first hand experience working on / with the newest models...NONEIS
- the newest models...NONEIS
- you guys dont even fucking KNOW about the newest models ok???
I have ALL the newest models.powertoni - the newest models.powertoni

also....i bought a ibook refurbished and had it for YEARS with no problems
@ work I have a beast of a machine (dual quad core, 6 gigs of ram, a terrabyte of storage on multiple drives) and the fucking thing barely starts up.
My last work machine (g5) had a hard drive go out on it.
My point:
It's a roll of the dice how long it will work. I think refurbished is actually a good solution for a lower end item.

and i would avoid an imac.....i hate the idea oh having a nice mac monitor that will last quite a while become obsolete because its attached to a computer that will become obsolete very quickly
but hey....they're priced to sell right?

I just bought the iMac 24-inch: 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, I upgraded to 4MB of memory and got the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS with 512MB memory upgrade as well.
Fast as hell!!!
- +1 My office is full of them, the new ones are solid, and fully capable of anything a print designer might throw at it.NONEIS
- You upgraded to 4MB! wow thats a lot of memory! ^^timfraserbrown

to many options..drives me nuts!

i've done print on an imac and they are great machines for the money. the monitors can be kind of fucked though. lots of colorshift, not sure if they addressed that.

- Whatever you do, stay the hell away from this :|NONEIS
- hahaha, why??enfocusmedia
- No support, active litigation, and presently it's only guaranteed/designed around working with Leopard...NONEIS
- and Windows, and Vista, and Linuxmonospaced

session,
if going the refurbished macbook pro route.
Yes, the higher the resolution the better. Try to get one with an intel processor too - they're blazing fast. Shoot for a comparable setup to this:2.4ghz intel core2 duo processor
2gb ram
160 gb hdd
firewire / usb 2.0
512mb ATI radeon video card
15" screenI have a glossy screen - which I love, but some people will argue that the matte screen is better for color.
This thing is blazing fast. It runs circles around my PC desktop that has dual processors. 2 yrs old and rarely hiccups with large indesign / photoshop / flash production work.
- So you think that is faster/better for production than a new iMac?NONEIS
- NONEIS0
Not much difference between the two, and fully capable for print design. I would highly recommend you get a 24", it makes a world of difference.

I appreciate everyones input...thank you!

all those snickering at iMac's with design snobbery should stop and read this:
The new rules for buying a Mac
http://www.macworld.com/article/…I replaced my PPC G5 with the 3ghz imac. Very much pleased with it... serving my AI/ PS/ ID needs well.
if memory serves me correct a big factor in the cost difference is the premium video card in the 3ghz machine.

"... for most people, even those who consider themselves power users, we strongly suggest an iMac rather than a Mac Pro."
- NONEIS0
I have to agree with Horton, and should also point out, that I am a recent experienced based convert to these things being legit design machines. I have never viewed them that way, and when I have used them, my suspicions were verified. But now? It's the exact same motherboard, the exact same ram, and the exact same chips that they put in everything else, they dissipate heat really well, they are damn quiet, damn, the thickness of the newest ones is practically the same as my Apple LCD which sort of pisses me off to be honest when I consider the footprint of my MacPro.
