An owner of a mortgage real estate co called me up and asked for a quote for a logo. I discussed what he wanted. I gave him a quote for $560 which was discounted. His budget was $300 or so. Are there people who will pay for logos? Am I asking for too much? I know that my time is more to me than $300. Any thoughts?

Depends on where you are located and what the market is like at this time in your area. Also depends on how much experience you have.

If that's all they'll pay, knock out some shit in an hour and be done with it.
If that's they're ballpark, you're fighting a losing battle if you want more money.

Mortgage companies still exist? I'm kidding... 300 is waaay low for me but I guess it depends on your market, experience, etc. We usually don't do anything logo-ish for less then 3 or 4 thousand. There's another thread about this recently as well.

He's in a market were haggling over prices is common place. He'll never give you what you deserve.

Not even worth thinking about.
The fact is he can afford it, but doesn't value it. You just need to ask yourself if you value what you do, or would you rather be pushed about by some tightfisted slimy real estate cocksnogger.
- Or just do it for the money and move on to more rewarding work.dusty_shackle
- 300 doesn't buy much time, but if you can knock up a type solution and get away with it, then yes, cool.max_prophet
- But guaranteed he won't be happy, and will to and fro and never pay. Too much hassle, not even pay.max_prophet

Plus he already thinks $300 is too much, so he'll try and get his "money's worth" out of you... the project will NEVER end.

If one thinks of a marketing budget of about 5-15% annual gross, I'm sure there's a little more than three hundred bucks in there there for a logo. Present it as a business case and maybe they'll look at it as such.
What other types of marketing do these guys do?- +1, just read this after posting my comment belowBaskerviIle

Ok... Listen Common Mistake # 1. You went in way too low. 600 dollars is nearing the pricing of some online logo maker site. Just go in higher, and be firm. If they want to go lower you dont want the client no matter what because they'll do that to you upfront and then feel like their doing a favor by paying you at all in the end. So just say screw that. And dont take those clients on.

I would never quote for doing 'a logo'. What's the point of that? It's just a picture. You'll give them a file they can't open, so they'll ask for a jpeg which they'll put in Word and stretch all over the place, any good work you've done will be wasted.
I'd quote for an identity, which would cover all aspects of how the company displays itself. Included within that would be any printed graphics they needed, posssibly a quote for a website or other applications. When you do it that way they shouldn't have a problem paying properly for it.
If you just deliver 'a logo' then I can see why some clients don't want to pay lots for it. You need to sell it as a valuable process to revitalize their company not just selling a little graphic.- hell ya!D_Dot
- good point. I'm trying that myself!Glitterati_Duane
- Well said baskerville, that's the way to go...stem
- Very noble, Baskerville - but there are echelons below yours where such effort is completely wasted.Nairn
- that is a great idea thanks

Agree with Baskerville.
If you're going in for an ident / brand design and manual then you're talking months of research, design, and then documenting. Of course that's a little more than three hundred, or even three thousand bucks.
The logo is really just the beginning but it's certainly an important aspect of their business. It's the first thing that most potential clients will see of them, and if they haven't a bricks and mortar storefront then it will help serve as a cornerstone to their online or printed presence.- yea i need to incorporate more selling techniques to help them seeredant

I guess I could see taking the job and then spending way too much time on it and it taking up my weekends. I'm just hoping a good proj comes up. Anyhoo thanks.

Depends where you are in your career, redant. If you're not doing many logos and want to get into brand and identity then you could look at this as an opportunity to expand your portfolio. If you regularly do this type of work then run don't walk from this project because you will spend way more time on it than necessary. Your call.
