I'm trying to create a new logo for myself. I've got big time designer's block. Any suggestions?

Dont go through any sort of creative process. That stuff will just hinder you in the long run.

Designing for yourself is always tough. Try to imagine you are creating this logo for a real client. Write a design brief and set a deadline for yourself. Good luck!

I was going to say go outside and forget about design for a while. Do some life-drawing, or clay sculpture – something that uses a different part of the brain to what you’re used to.
Find some way of making me take my own advice.

As a requisite for our senior portfolio class while I was in college we had to develop a personal identity system - a logo/logotype applied to a website, collateral, etc. We did various exercises used to define perceptions about ourselves and our work. It was really important for me to get feedback from other people - designers, friends and strangers alike to develop something I felt comfortable with. It really is a basic communication problem tho - what do you want to say about yourself to the rest of the general public?

write a two column list describing who you are/what you do.
list #1: what i am
list #2: what i am notfigure out a way to express that character using type, line, texture, size, color, tone.
sketch quickly and for a couple of hours. use markers, crayons, thick pens, thin pens. don't sit on the computer until you have at least 5-10 sketches you think have potential.
work 'em up. show 'em to your respected colleagues. refine, revisit, work it to a decent fit and finish and then have a long night of drinking and a couple days recovery.

the worst thing you could do to yourself is base this purely on style. unless you are really good or a well seasoned designer you'll change your mind constantly and it likely won't feel finished.
- yep, that’s right. Get drunk and get some stylish ideas from ffffound.MrOneHundred

Good stuff. Thanks people

stop taking yourself so seriously. best and most memorable logos come from fucking around and not caring so much.

ball your fist and ram it up the backdoor. then attempt the logo. if you can't solve it in the next 5 minutes do the ram-job again. through negative-reward therapy like this you'll solve that logo + and other jobs in no time, knowing that if you don't you'll probably need stitches.

1) look at a clock
2) think about these things in this order: a duck, tits, the ocean, marmelade, the first time you whacked off ever, now think of a word
3) draw this word with your left hand (right if you are a leftie) in 5 minutes
4) connect all the lines you think are missing, color in every other shape
5) select the shape that is the most interesting to you
6) what does this shape to resemble to you? now go outside and scream what that is out loud 10 times.
7) if someone tells you to shut the fuck up then redraw what it actually is using 2 colors and a maximum of 8 lines. If not, restart the process.
8) if anyone asks why you have that logo refer them to me.- I'm going to go through this process for everything I EVER design now. This is gold.meffid
