so i know there are quite a few very talented photographers here. i hardly know much about photography myself, but i've taken an interest recently and want to learn more (and obviously get better).
i purchased an entry level dSLR (canon 450D, or rebel xsi). i have the standard lens kit. can anyone recommend any additional lenses to go along with it? i'll mostly be shooting (practicing) beauty/fashion/etc.
beyond that, can anyone recommend any books or websites that will be a worthwhile resource as i jump into this wildly overwhelming art?

Forget about lenses for now and learn with what you have.
Some people will say that camera and glass doesn't matter and in some respect that's true but a good photographer uses the camera as an extension of their brain, not the other way around.Just remember, you have to take a lot of bad photos in order to take any good ones.

fuck, i was a photographer for years before i even discovered newstoday. then i became a designer but somehow people here only need webdesigners. so i started to hate this farkenjaab.
now i have to start over in photography (professionally again) and i have little money, and only one SLR and one pretty basic zoom lens.
you can't get credit with banks at all for creative jobs like this over here.
so i have to deal with it.
and let me tell you this son:
the BEST photographers out there started out with extremely simple equipment.. for instance Corbijn but also many other, such as Sieff and so many more..
WHY?
Because you have to focus SO MUCH more on your skills and IDEAS instead of ENDLESS whining about equipment as so many starting photographers do.And if you do have a million, and you buy all the equipment you can, and believe me, i know people who do, you usually end up shooting shitty because you rely too much on your stuff and "all those possibilities" that it becomes supertechnical and very technically superb but often pretty boring..
WORK ON IDEAS
WORK ON BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF LIGHT AND COMPOSITION!AND GOODLUCK!

Cheap option:
50mm f/1.8Not-so-cheap option:
50mm f/1.4Pricey option:
50mm f/1.2- the 50mm f1/8 is essential. I fell in love with my camera all over again when I got that lens.flashbender

I am not a big fan of "graphic deisgner" photographers.

Just take your camera out and explore the world around you. Take a lot of pictures, bring them home, and look and learn from them. Repeat.

Did anyone mentioned yet you need to work on ideas and on basic knowledge of light and composition?
