Shouldn't tax rate be a consideration here? It's hard to measure income without paying attention to how high taxes are.

Rents are important to assess how much money you have left. I for one, make 1250€ p/month (6 hours daily) - not counting freelance work - and my rent is €200 for a house. Really depends on what part of the country you're in. That's why I moved to the mountains. The only drop-back is that it's hard to fall in love with them goat-hearders.

Also, we usually say earnings after tax.

The real question is: how much are you able to save p/ month?

Before the Euro stepped in, I was able to buy a country-house (for 80k Euros), a car, I dined-out every each day, and I could save 25% my earnings. I was happy then. After the Euro stepped in, I was at loss by -10% monthly, and now I'm a troll and a cunt.
