23kon, couple of questions.
1. am I selling boxer shorts I wore and put design on ?
or
2. user submitted worn boxer shorts, to my studio for graphic treatment ?
- I would go with 1. for sure
Option 2. would stick up your place pretty fast.Bender
- I would go with 1. for sure

With art that cool Joshua you could be in bed with Target soon.
I'd buy those bath towels :)

The illustrations and artwork are bang on. I can't say anything bad about them. The details on the pack and goods are also solid and strong, especially the marks and tabs on the packs, I love the details and placement of them.
Sorry for the crude and irrational comment earlier, but I am was more or less speaking to the design of the packs/bags. I guess it was more about the durability and quality of these packs than the illustrations itself. I guess its subjective when it comes to each individual person buying a product. My dakine pack has lasted 10 years and it still does it job today, totally functional and I still can take it out and not feel embarrassed (though that whole neo-punk stuff does make it a little better).
Again apologies for the tactful comment earlier.

Joshua;
Although I really like your work (I'm heavy into scripted/generated art) and these goods look pretty nice.. I get the feeling I've seen it (the patterns on the goods) before. I havn't seen them up-close so I can't really judge, but it kinda looks like you just started up your flash-application and threw out some designs (I know it's more than just play-and-presto-art). I, in no way, want to call you a one-trick-pony, but somehow the advancements in technology and design you have made in the past gave me higher expectations. As I still respect you as a designer, I hope these products become every success you want it to be :)
- didn't you just call him a one trick pony (in a round about way)calculator

jayoh, already done... target picked up my housewares for 1600 of their stores in the US... the bags and papergoods won't hit until Spring 2009 (we think)

Speaking of target, I'm curios about what group of people this is thought for. Preteens, teenagers, postteens?
I can't really see myself using it, but give 2 years from now when my kid starts school, I would buy the hole lineup for him for sure.

- Ed Harris was a good choice (likeness) for Pollock in that movie they made about him!!uncle_helv

LMAO! I was joking but congratulations!
God bless America (and licensing)

Some of those are yummy.
Congrats.

Not being difficult but is that creative? My girlfriends brother is a genius with code but not remotely creative. I suspect he could 'program something to make creative patterns'.
Just being devils advocate
- if ur cousin programs something then he is CREATING something, so that makes him CREATIVE23kon
- that's like saying I created a shit and I'm creativebabaganush
- or gf's brother. oops - not cousin23kon

They look a bit... "gay".
- neue75_bold0
nice one!
finally, something for the 15 - 50 year old female demographic...
- babaganush0
23Kon, I get your point. I think it's a valid dissection of what it is to be 'creative'. In conventional definitions of creative though I think it's dubious...I imagine there's no definite answer

cue 'design a bag', 'design a layout pad' competitions a' plenty

23kon:
neverblink, what's wrong with the designs even if they are created by computer randomness?
--------------------------There is nothing wrong with the designs. People who are not terribly familiar with Joshua's work (shopping at Target) will probably like them for just being pretty designs without knowing anything about the generated aspect of them.
There might be something wrong with the application Joshua is using. Well, not really wrong, but it's showing it's limitations. There are only so many parameters that can change (shape/size/color/border/positio... Which will make the work recognizable, but also a bit repetitive. You could probably say the same about Pollocks work.
But I'm not really looking for a debate about the fact if Joshua is creative or not, or if his work is art or not.
- SkyPoo0
I hadn't even heard of Joshua Davis until I came to QBN so my knowledge of him and his work is limited, but I don't think there's any correlation between what he's 'created' and what he's selling here as goods.
As far as I know he pioneered some stuff early on, that work gave his name some 'brand value' ... so now he's sticking the work that visually is most closely associated with his name onto products and selling them. Good luck I say! ... What's creativity go to do with it at this point?
- You are right. I shouldn't have looked at this as an opportunity for the designer to actually design something.neverblink

bed sheets would rock. I dunno ain't too shabby. Good stuff.

JD workday:
Start up computer, start up Flash, hits the "generate random coolness pattern button", sends it to Target who sends it China and gets back cool products. Skates for the rest of the day in the backyard ramp. What's wrong with that?
