How much time have you got?

a friend of mine who traveled there for a year (and now she's there) wrote a touristic guide about NZ.
Not sure if there is an english version (the publisher is pretty small)

Oh wooops 3mths. OK get a car for sure buy one cheap second hand or rent if you buy you can resell for about the same price. A embrace the amazing kiwi summer road trip, I get all homesick just thinking of it. Start Auckland go up around bay or islands all through Coromandel take in hot water beach (hot springs bubbling through the sand you dig a bath and chanel in the the ocean to cool you down). Then spend some time in Wellington / a day or two in Napier then circle around and do the west coast before head to the south island. Hire a kayak and do the abel tasman track for at least three days one of the best things I ever did back home, spend lots of time doing the west coast of the south island and do a few of the major walking tracks. Allow at least a week for around Wanaka / Queenstown. Have a blast

Don't ignore Auckland - there's a lot going on and it's a hell of a lot of fun. Everything from the cafe's of Ponsonby, the shopping on Vulcan Lane and High Street and the west coast beaches (Piha, Bethels, Muruwai).

I used to live in New Zealand, I miss it.
Places to go:
- Mt Maunganui - great beach, love this place, nr Tauranga (also nice)
( http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=… )Pauanui - lovely beach, I remember the water being crystal clear at the end of the Coramandel
( http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=… )
Rotorua - smells like crap, but all the geothermal activity is pretty neat to see. I think it's called 'Hell's Gate' a big park walking around all the spots - good afternoon out.

There's a few. Rotorua and Tauranga are in the middle of north island near Taupo - the other one is up north by Auckland.
Take pics!
